SATURDAY ESSAY by QUENTIN LETTS
QUENTIN LETTS: Today it is exactly 100 days since Britain voted to leave the European Union. The final confirmation came just before dawn the morning after the polls closed, when David Dimbleby turned to the BBC cameras and ‘called’ the referendum. ‘And the answer is: We’re out,’ said a funereal Dimbleby. The time, which some of us will never forget, was 4.40am on Friday, June 24. For my own part, I had spent a fitful night in a poky hotel room in London’s Fitzrovia, occasionally switching on the television for an update on results.
When Dimbleby uttered the BBC's verdict, I sat on the bed andburst into tears of joy.

[At the Tory conference on Monday October 3,2016 'let them remember the Churchill touch. It carried the mind back to those brief years when another Churchill was the storm centre of the House, bearding the mighty Gladstone with calculated insolence, ridiculing the " Marshall and Snelgroves" of his own party, and leaping on to his seat in the hour of victory, waving his hat and shouting with schoolboy glee. What a meteor it was! How brilliant its path, how dramatic its climax, how tragic its eclipse! And now his son [Winston Churchill] leaps forward into the arena, with the same daring, the same aplomb, the same incomparable insolence. Again the cry is " A Churchill! A Churchill!" and to that cry the street responds as to no other. For it is the call to high adventure and careless gallantry. It suggests the clatter of hoofs in the moonlight, the clash of swords on the turnpike road. it is the breath of romance stirring the prosaic air of politics... LET THE SPIRIT OF WINSTON CHURCHILL resonate once again in a TORY PARTY CONFERENCE to lend his great strength of LOVE of COUNTRY its FREEDOM its LAW and HISTORY and once more the clarion call as he showed the nation in 1940 with his great spirit of determination to FIGHT THE FOE with all his strength and commitment until VICTORY against GERMANY was WON. He himself in 1962 was visited by Field Marshall Montgomery who found him in bed smoking a cigar. Churchill shouted for more brandy and protested against Britain's proposed entry into the then so-called .which in truth was was a snare which the majority so-called representatives in the HOUSE in 1972 gave away the FUTURE of a FREE -INDEPENDENT-DEMOCRATIC NATION STATEof
