Archbishop attacks the politicians who put immigrants first.

THE Archbishop of York yesterday criticised local politicians for favouring immigrants over the indigenous residents.

 

Betrayed by Town Hall

 

THE Archbishop accused Lambeth and Tower Hamlets councils of ‘discriminatory’ house polices in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

 

Both sidelined white, working class communities by replacing housing waiting lists with policies giving priority to migrants, single mothers, the unemployed and the homeless.

 

One controversial Lambeth policy was a Short Life Housing Programme.

In 1986, the council established a task force to reclaim nearly 2,000 homes from squatters. Because many were considered ‘unfit’ for letting to families at the top of the waiting list, they were given to families nearer the bottom on short leases.

 

The system bread dissatisfaction among people who saw those considered ‘in need’ -especially newly arrived Caribbean migrants -receiving houses early.

 

In Tower Hamlets, the Liberal Democrat-led council operated a ‘Sons and Daughters Scheme’ between 1986 and 1994 which gave preference to the children of parents who had lived in the borough a certain time.

 

It was attacked as discriminatory against Bengali families, so a points-based system was brought in which tilted the balance in favour of immigrants.

 

Lambeth Council questioned the accuracy of the Archbishops comments last night and pointed out that no BNP candidates stood in the borough in last week’s council election.

Dr John Sentamu accused them of failing to support ‘the indigenous population’.

 

Such policies, he added helped push white voters towards the racist politics of the British National Party.

 

The Ugandan-born churchman’s intervention is the latest in a series of high-powered criticisms of the way government, local councils and housing associations have alienated working-class communities.

 

At the centre of the concerns are polices that give first pick of subsidised homes to those considered ‘vulnerable’ or ‘in need’

 

The Archbishop said on BBC Radio Four’s Today Programme: ‘ Some local politics has not been very good at actually supporting the indigenous population that must be acknowledged.

 

‘If you go in some areas were I have worked, it looks sometimes that migrants have appeared to be getting the things the indigenous population is not getting’.

 

He referred to areas of South and East London where he worked in the 1980’s and 1990’s as a priest and a junior bishop.

 

Dr Sentamu said:

‘In Tulse Hill It was quite obvious that the housing policy by Lambeth Council was not actually fair to the indigenous population. This was also true in Tower Hamlets’.

 

He added: ‘There has been some policies that have not helped the indigenous population.’

 

The BNP exploited the claim that housing has gone to immigrants rather than local people to become the second largest party on Barking and Dagenham Council in East London in last week’s elections.

 

The far-Right party has also consolidated its foothold in the North of England.

 

Earlier this week, senior Labour backbencher Frank Field complained that tax payers are made to wait years for a home while the homeless, single mothers and asylum seekers are put at the front of the queue.

 

Dr Sentamu’s remarks are a blow for the new Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly who insisted this week that the rules for allocating social housing will not change. She promised to push through a massive new building programme and ‘root out’ opposition to development.

 

The Archbishop is an influential figure in the politics of race. He was one of the authors of the McPherson Report into the murder of teenager Stephen Lawrence which coined the phrase ‘institutional racism’

But he has also complained that the Left-wing doctrine of MULTICULTURALISM

 

has suppressed

 

ENGLISH IDENTITY.

 

Dr Sentamu said of housing unfairness:

 

‘The only way to cure this problem is not by politics which says that if the minorities and the migrants were out this would be a better place.’

 

He said many of those attracted by BNP thinking ‘don’t realise that at the end of the Second World War the British government invited people from the Caribbean because they could carry out their driving, their work in hospitals, their cleaning jobs. People came here in order actually help this great nation.

 

[The Archbishop was right to remind many of the present generation WHY many of the immigrants came to our shores over five decades ago. As Dr Sentamu has already said much harm has been done by the discrimination against the indigenous population.

 

As we are sure the Churchman also realises that the massive open-door immigration and asylum policy of the present Government over the past nine years has brought into being the ‘ghetto ‘ culture in many parts of the country instead of the merging of the newcomers with the host people.

 

The present fiasco of the foreign criminals many of whom are untouchable in the population at large who should have been deported but instead were given at the door of the prison their personal affects in a black plastic bag and left to disappear into the

 

50,000,000 population.

 

Most people accept the need for immigration but it should be controlled to allow integration and strict allocation of the types of occupations needed

rather than now many immigrants who are exploited and the inevitable appeal of crime in a country where the VICTIMS find themselves in prison or a police cell overnight after an intrusive body search and the criminals demand their RIGHTS or body organs on DEMAND. ]

Dr Sentamu, 58, was appointed to the Church of England’s second highest post last autumn.

 

The bishop, who fled Uganda in the 1970’s, has made an immediate mark because of his flair for attracting attention to Christianity and because he has proved more willing to give a lead on moral controversies than many church colleagues.

COULD THIS MAN SAVE THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND?

On A sunny breezy day in Bridlington, a group of local people with stout shoes and windswept hair have gathered on a cliff overlooking the harbour. The air of excitement is apparent.

 

They have come to see Dr John Sentamu, the Ugandan-born Archbishop of York, who in the six months since his inauguration, has electrified the fusty old Church of England.

 

He began his boat trip on the river Ouse from Bridlington to York Minister dressed in a cloth-of-gold cope and accompanied by traditional African drummers. Recently, he put on a hoodie at a youth forum in Bradford.

 

He is in boisterous contrast to the cerebral, serious, subtle Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury.

 

This week, launching the Faithful Cities report on the poverty gap, Dr Williams asked in rhetorical anguish:

 

‘Why is it that there are still some things we have not been able to tackle?’

 

Dr Sentamu put it in robustly populist terms. Referring to the Beckhams’ pre-World Cup party on Sunday, he declared:

 

‘For one person to spend £50,000 on an evening out, while another earns £131 a week, is just not right.’

Charismatic

 

Sentamu is exuberant, utterly charismatic and possessing a warm self-deprecating humour. And suddenly in Yorkshire, the question is being asked:

 

‘Can this man save the dying Church of England?’

 

Dr John Sentamu appears on the cliff-top from nowhere, a neat-looking man with greying hair and a familiar gap-toothed grin. He speaks the received perfectly enunciated English of a bygone colonial age.

 

He seeks out the children in the company, engaging them directly, examining their roots of the names. ‘That is from the Bible, my friend.’ Unsurprisingly, it is among the young generation that Dr Sentamu is making the converts.

 

Today he is at one of many public meetings. He takes the microphone. ‘Ronnie Corbet. Who remembers Ronnie Corbett?’ The crowd give a delighted roar. ‘Ronnie Corbett used to say:

 

‘I’m telling you a story. It comes from Bridlington…’

 

Sentamu is amazingly fluent in populist English cultural heritage. On Radio 4’s Today programmee, he invoked the name of John Betjeman in relation to the state of disrepair of English churches and he spoke of G.K Chesterton when he asked about the BNP. Neither of these writers -middle-class traditionalists -gets much airing on the BBC.

 

Irony

 

Someone calls out:

 

‘What do you think of Yorkshire people?’

 

Dr Sentamu manages to convey warmth and irony.

 

‘They tell it like this.’

 

 

An emboldened clergyman adds:

 

‘They say this is God’s own county.’

 

The archbishop suddenly stern.

‘But I don’t see them in church. Until I see them in church, it is not God’s own county.’

 

He prays and then blesses the company; the blind and disabled, the young, the strong, the shy. He offers on-the-spot baptisms. I notice the same expression on everyone’s face and I think it happiness.

 

Them Dr Sentamu belts out in the cultivated tones of Trevor McDonald:

 

‘Three cheers for Bridlington, Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray!’

 

Waving he is off, walking the streets, visiting schools and halls, preaching, converting.

 

The Christians on this stretch of Yorkshire coast are crediting Dr Sentamu with a long-awaited, grass roots revival of the English Church.

 

Sandy Mills, a Salvation Army officer, eyes dancing, explains:

 

‘We need him, a charismatic head of Church. It starts at the top. Someone who will stand up and preach and create disciples. The Church in England has been watered down too much: people don’t want to give offence, so that won’t speak up.’

 

She concedes that this is implicit criticism of the Archbishop of Canterbury, but Dr Sentamu will not allow a rift between the two men. He once likened Dr Williams to Moses, comparing himself to the practical father -in-law Jethro.

Inevitably, Dr Sentamu has attracted some criticism for his style. Is he sacrificing dignity by all this larking about, by taking himself to the people rather than bidding the people come to him.

 

Sandy Mills, the Salvation Army officer is vehement:

 

‘David in the Psalms was told not to be undignified. So he stripped down to a loincloth. Look here. People discussing the Scriptures again. The Bible had fallen into disuse, like a forgotten book club. Now it is the Living Word again.’

 

Dr Sentamu recently gave a tantalising insight into the roots of his humility. He recalled Desmond Tut’s mother, who worked as a maid for Bishop Trevor Huddleston in South Africa. Every morning the bishop would doff his cap to her.

 

Dr Sentamu, 56, was raised under British colonial rule, his school fees paid by missionaries. He is genuinely perplexed by the shame so many educated English people for their culture, their history and their religion.

 

The son of a headmaster, his childhood memories were listening to the Queen’s Coronation on the radio. His family always checked their purchases for a ‘Made in Britain’ stamp.

 

Today he has called for a proper celebration of St George’s Day.

Vibrancy

 

So it has come to this:

A Ugandan child of the Empire is trying to persuade England to take pride in it’s past and its Christian tradition.

 

Anne Riding, a cheerful pensioner, who has for many years run a Christian school in Gambia, says that Dr Sentamu has brought the innocence and vibrancy of the Church in Africa to renew a desiccated Church of England.

 

‘The Church is so much stronger in Africa. They believe in the spirit, the word. Even in Gambia, a Muslim country, you are free to proclaim your Christian faith. Muslims and Christians there are both confident in the faiths. It’s time Men of God came forward over here.’

 

Bernard Oates, Pastor of Harbourside Church in Bridlington says that what we have lacked until Dr Sentamu -is Christian leadership.

 

‘Somebody who is ready to preach the Gospel, the Bible. The Church is afraid of speaking out in case it upsets Muslims.

 

‘There is so much opposition to Christian faith in England’

 

‘English teachers are not allowed to teach their own faith. When I went to school we were taught Scripture and everyone sang hymns. Now we have a Christian Prime Minister who carries a copy of the Koran in his pocket. Is he Christian? When he is asked if he and President Bush prayed together he would answer. Why not?

 

‘The Queen is a Christian and when she was crowned she swore to be Defender of the Faith.

 

Prince Charles says he will be defender of faiths. So in fact he is not defending anything.’

 

Dr Sentamu’s supporters complain that the Establishment has tried to combat Muslim extremism by secularism or silence. Could a flowering of the Christian tradition in this country be another way? Why should not Christians discuss morality and spirituality?

 

Dr Sentamu’s mission is to reconcile England with its Christian tradition.

 

‘Christianity is in the very soil of this place. Look at what you did in the past, remember what you did,’ Sentamu cries.

 

He turns to me with either salt spray or tears in his eyes.

 

‘ People are becoming excited by Christianity again. There are huge crowds.

 

This country has always had it, but now the people need a reconnection - with morality and with spirituality.

 

‘Among the young, what is happening is amazing. There is a hunger for belonging, for believing. Thee is a hunger and slowly it is being fed.’
