Tory MPs from the former Red Wall seats seized from Labour in 2019 have begun to revolt against the Government’s obsession with the COP26 conference on global warming.

They want Ministers to turn their minds instead to the alarming rise in illegal migration across the Channel.

They have a point. Many British people view this as one of the most urgent problems facing the country and they would like to know what Boris Johnson is going to do about it, especially since the French authorities seem to be incapable of decisive or effective action.

Criminal people traffickers, more confident by the day, are now smuggling so many men and women across the Strait of Dover that the known daily total recently reached 1,185.

Even the deteriorating weather has not reduced the flow, though an unknown number drown, a disgraceful side effect of this cynical industry. How is it that France, a modern state with huge technical resources, efficient armed services and large police forces, has so little control over its own coastline and territorial waters that it cannot prevent such tragedies? Others presumably make it to land without being observed or recorded by the UK border authorities.

Even allowing for days when the sea is too rough to cross, this means that each year about 300,000 illegal immigrants could soon be reaching this country by this route, a figure roughly the same as the populations of Newcastle upon Tyne, Brighton or the London suburb of Hillingdon.

The Mail on Sunday does not blame the migrants for trying to reach our country. We understand that our prosperous, peaceful and safe civilisation is a beacon to those in lands that are less fortunate.

Nor do we oppose immigration as such. Every country needs some migrants and benefits from them. And we believe it is the duty of civilised nations to give sanctuary to genuine refugees.

In 1972, the half-crazed Ugandan despot Idi Amin expelled large numbers of Asians in a blatant act of racial persecution. To the great benefit of this country, thousands of them settled in Britain – where they have contributed enormously to the nation they made their home.

At the time this was seen as a major political and social crisis, and a considerable strain on our resources.

Yet the total of those who came was just over 27,000 – a figure that could now be equalled by illegal cross-Channel migrants in a single month.

And in the case of the Ugandan Asians, they did not simply prefer Britain to France as a final destination. They held actual British passports, came here legally and were beyond doubt the victims of cruel persecution.

So it is quite reasonable, and in fact desirable, for Tory MPs to be concerned about this present issue and to expect a reasoned and practical response from Downing Street.

Tom Tugendhat describes in this newspaper today the worrying developments in which migrants are being used as weapons against the West, on the border between Belarus and Poland. This ugly confrontation only makes the problem more urgent.

Uncontrolled migration is unfair on those who follow the rules, rewards criminal gangs, produces tension and bitterness and makes integration far harder.

The remarks made by the outgoing head of Border Force, which we report today, suggest a high-level unwillingness to grasp that proper frontier control is a necessary part of any civilised state.

It is time that the Prime Minister and Home Secretary Priti Patel together turned their minds to ending this intolerable scandal and human tragedy.

Growth and Development of the English Parish.

In the words of the author in 1932 the following chapters:

 

“ To describe as far as possible the story of the English parish not only as regards the religious but also the social life…It is often forgotten that no man or boy can possibly understand the history of his country if he does not understand its life and ideas.”

 

[We have it in mind to endeavour to bring to you each chapter in the life of the parish of England covering the years 651 to 1890.]

 

As the author Wray Hunt further mentions the chapters of the periods of history of the parish “to be accepted, not as a history of England but as a companion … to be read together with the usual political histories, so that the reader of these latter may be able to imagine the sort of people among who those things happened that are” described in the following chapters.

[Our purpose in taking this journey through English history by accounting the life of the community around and within the Christian Church is to show those who like some Anglican clergyman today who say that England is no longer a Christian country whereas it would be impossible for our land of England to deny our Faith with so many reminders of our Christian heritage in our living landscape- its past supporters at rest within the precincts of our numerous places of worship since St Augustine came to our shores over 1400 years ago and Christian Monarchy in England.

 

We do not deny that those who attend Anglican Church services has been steadily declining for half a century though some Christian communities who have adhered more strictly to Christian doctrine have either held their flock or even in some cases have increased their congregation.

 

As is outlined elsewhere in our Bulletin ’A Defence of Christianity’ by C.E.M.Joad-philosopher- writer (1951) that so far from Christianity becoming a world-wide religion,

 Christ taught that it would be a religion of the few.

 

In other parts of the world –USA, Africa and many other countries there has been a revival taking place and it is beginning in our own homeland.  So the clergyman who told his flock in October 2004, that England is no longer a Christian country had better withdraw his judgement because there is and will be a return to Christian Values because the other possibility will not succeed when we see the Christian heritage which meets our eyes in Hamlet, Village, Town and City which are a constant reminder that we are never far from our roots and for many of us still when we reach our final resting place.

 

The escalating crime, drug and other destroyers of a community have been having their way for the past 40 years and only a dramatic realisation of the dangers now with us all will there be a return to the Christian Values which can only make our lives better and safer.

 

Within our country we have those of other Faiths who are not so negligent of their mission and it should be a reminder to us all that a Religious belief should be   accompanied by a moral accountability.

 

We have seen how the grievous free-for-all offered by the politicians in a secular society can take their toll unless there is a moral dimension. Don’t blame the government but ourselves in being enticed into bottomless black hole where no moral accountability seems necessary or possible.

 

Those responsible for protecting the community such as Chief Police Constables have been warning for decades of the problems which would follow the relaxation of the Drug, Drink and now the Betting laws apart from the lack of discipline in the home and in the school and community.]

Chapter 1/ X1X

 

 

The King’s Hall

(AD 651-670)

 

I have given this title to the first chapter because, strange as it may seem, it is to a king’s hall that we must go if we are to understand the beginning of the English parish.  The Romans, though some of them were Christians – and we know that there were churches in Roman Britain – knew nothing of the parish, and even the earliest missionaries to the pagan English knew nothing of it.

 

Yet it is certain that had the parish not developed English life today would be something very unlike the life that we know, as will be clear enough when, in the course of [the following Chapters] we consider what the parish did.

 

But first we must go to the king’s hall, northward, into the bleak moorlands of Yorkshire.  There, in a town that we can call Whitby, we shall find what we seek.

 

For a king’s dwelling the place is bare and uninviting.  Built of rough-hewn timber, the cold wind of the north howls about it, through the unglazed openings that serve as windows, and down the rough hole in the roof that is the sole-chimney.  Yet once inside we come into the midst of a very august assembly.

 

There is a rough board table running down the centre of the long smoke-blackened room.  At the head sits a man dressed in course garments, but they are set off by a collar of fur and a great rudely carved gold chain.  He wears on his head a rude gold circlet for a crown.  That is Oswy; King of the Northumbrians and at the moment the most powerful king in England.

 

On his left hand sits one clad in a long grey robe, a man whose gentle face is lined and seamed with years of hard toil, of travelling up and down the land when roads were mere tracks through unbroken forest or over desolate heath, and a traveller must face the perils of starvation and of wild beasts as soon as he leaves the shelter of the town or village and sets his face toward the next goal of his journey.  The man’s head is curiously shaven, bald from crown to the forehead, with a crescent of hair marking the edge of the shaven patch.  This is Colman, leader of the Irish Christian party.

 

Opposite sits a man similarly clad in a plain grey robe.  But this man’s face is stronger altogether.  The heavy line between his brows, the obstinate set of the thin lips, tell of stubborn vigour.  This man can be almost mulish in his obstinacy, and at best is a determined, pushing person, sincere enough perhaps in his religion, but utterly incapable of appreciating anyone else’s point of view.

 

This is Wilfrid, leader of the Roman Church party in Northumbria.  His head is shaved too, but not like Colman’s.  A little bald patch at the crown surrounded by a ring of hair is his fashion.  H despises Colman’s method of tonsuring, as this head-shaving is called.  He says that the man who tried to buy from the Apostles the gift of the Holy Ghost wore his hair like that, and from his name, Simon Magus, Wilfred and his party nickname the others Magians.  Indeed, Wilfred has just been arguing this point with his Irish opponent.

 

The King looks from one party to the other as if in doubt. At last he speaks.

“ We have heard Colman,” he says, “that our Lord spake to the Apostle Peter, saying, ‘Thou art Peter, and upon this rock will I build my Church.’ Also that our lord said to this same blessed Peter, ‘I will give unto thee the keys of he kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Tell me, Colman, has your St Columba any such promise?”

 

For a moment the Irish missionary is dumb; he sees the trap.  Then with a sigh, he shakes his head. 

 

“Then,” continues the King, “ it were best that I agreed with the followers of Peter, lest when my turn comes he lock me out of heaven.”

 

The conference is over.  Colman rises with a sigh.  His work in England is done.  There is nothing left now but to return to Iona, the Holy Island off the rugged Scottish coast, where his abbey lies.  Wilfred smiles triumphantly. His party in the Church have won over to their side the strongest king in England, in whose dominions, moreover, the Irish Church was most powerful.

 

But the subtle King has is own secret.  He reverences and respects St Peter, but it is what St Peter’s successors have done that really moves him to act.

 

For the Irish, or Celtic Church, good men as its clergy might be, could never have developed the parish system, and that the Irish Church might win over all England appeared at one time possible.

 

There was no head of the Irish Church.  Each abbot was lord of his own abbey, and arranged as he thought good for the religious needs of the surrounding districts.  Sometimes there would be a dispute with a neighbouring abbey, and then, since there was no common superior to whom the case might go – for the bishop, so important in the Roman Church, was beneath the abbot in the Celtic Church –quaint things sometimes happened. 

 

There are stories of pitched battles between monks of rival Irish abbeys when some long-standing dispute had grown more than usually bitter.

 

But Oswy wanted to unite England under his rule, and such a Church [Celtic] as this, a group of disunited abbeys owning no common head, would hinder rather than help him in this object.  On the other hand, the Roman Church, every member of which must submit to the Pope, with its bishops and archbishops to keep order and discipline each in his own sphere, acted according to known and definite rules, would be, he hoped, the means of uniting rather than dividing England.

 

That is why in telling the story of the parish we go first to the king’s hall, where at the Synod of Whitby AD 664 it was decided that Roman, not Celtic Christianity should be the religion of England.  For had the verdict gone the other way it is doubtful if the parish as we know it would ever have come into existence.

Alternative futures

 

There is no inevitability about British membership of the euro and ever-closer union though it is certainly an effective argument put about by Europhiles. Polls show that nevertheless a growing majority of the British people is hostile to abandoning the pound sterling, even though at the same time it believes that we are bound to join (2001).

 

This defeatism needs to be challenged by beginning with the assumptions that underlie the reasons advanced for European Union. The most important of these is the prevention of wars that have ravaged the Continent in the first half of the twentieth century. But German military power, together with that of most European states, has been absorbed in the American-led NATO alliance, which is what has really ensured the peace. It is alliances put together in this way that have traditionally been the means of co-operation between states, not supernational commitments of the kind involved in European Union.

 

These have not delivered since 1973 the economic growth, which formed the argument for membership at the time. The abusive assertions of isolationism and xenophobia that have since appeared just cannot be taken seriously.

 

There is also the deeper issue of globalisation that is now advanced as the case for integration. World trade has increased immensely; capital is free to move all over the globe in the service of giant, multinational corporations, while the Internet is a free zone for the exchange of information. It is said that in the face of this assault on everything traditional about National Government there is simply no point in trying to retain a national economic policy.

 

Of course things have changed enormously, including the power of governments to control exchange rates but the argument is much overstated. The basic need in this field is to have floating rates and these are open to the influence of nation-state governments, which can continue to navigate their own macro-economic policies.

 

In some quarters there has also been a deep emotional hostility to the very idea of the nation-state, buttressed in the past by the attraction of Marxist doctrines that advocate the repudiation of capitalism. Within the present government the hostility has survived the complete abandonment of the doctrines. It is paradoxical for this to have occurred at the time when the creation of nation-states is a striking and welcome development, one for which there is evidently an imperative demand.

 

Empires have gone and most people in the world now live in nation-states and show no inclination, outside Western Europe, to give them up. Self –government has an unequalled legitimacy and it is helping to bring about the growth of democracy within states, which in turn is helping to reduce the risk of war.

 

 At the same time agreements and treaties between states are endlessly negotiated, the great majority of them concerned with forging trade links, certainly not with building embryo states. It is necessary only to look at North America, Latin America, Asia or Africa to see this.

 

The continuing impetus to ram together the separate nations and states of Europe springs from the long struggle between France and Germany and the memory of their wars. It does not have the same force for other countries and the Europhile argument that the United Kingdom is a weak and exhausted nation that has no choice but to associate itself with this movement is patently false and absurd.

which exposes the dangers which have taken place because of the

unlimited immigration policy of the present Government.

‘ Millions of moderate Britons – deeply worried that limitless immigration is destroying their Nation’s Identity – are cowed into silence by the Left who argue that any discussion of this subject is racist. –What Nonsense!’

 ‘I think of myself as a one-nation Tory, a social liberal’, says Mr Max Hastings.  ‘ I applauded Margaret Thatcher’s resurrection of the enterprise culture, deplored her indifference to the poor, favour Europe but not today the Euro, mistrust the police, loath capital punishment, want grammar schools restored and support university top-up fees’.

  In Modern Britain, all these matters are contentious, but we can argue about them anywhere. There is one issue, however, about which all public exchanges are muted, stifled. The Left has driven debate on Immigration underground. It brandishes above the heads of every opponent of large-scale increases in the population of this Island that most terrible of charges – Racism. And that threat works.

 

Even the Conservative party, desperate to recover Power, holds back from assaulting the Government on its deplorable record, for fear of unleashing the wrath of the Liberal media. The worst legacy of Enoch Powell’s ravings in the Sixties is that they made it impossible ever since to hold a rational debate in Britain about Immigration.

 

Figures published this week show that the non-white population of London has topped two million, almost double the figure of a decade ago. Britain’s capital has become a Bable, as anyone who rides on a Tube or Bus perceives in a moment, among passengers drawn from dozens of Nationalities.

 

Enthusiasts such as London Mayor –Ken Livingston applaud the’ richness and diversity’ this creates. They speak of immigrants’ priceless contribution to the ‘London buzz’, rivalling the melting pot of New York. Livingston welcomes the inflow of immigrants, who account for almost a third of his city’s population.

 

‘ Our poll shows that nearly eight out of ten Londoners think that the city’s cultural diversity is one of its most attractive features’, he says. This may be true, but Mr Livingston fail to add that 80% of British poll respondents also wants more effective control of Immigration.

 

And the truth is that the real number of Immigrants in London is higher than the official figure, because so many illegal residents avoid censuses.

 

For instance, the latest survey records 45,000 people from the whole South American continent in London, yet the Columbian embassy believes Britain is hosting 150,000 of its citizens alone.

 

We know that more than 250,000 immigrants and asylum seekers are arriving here each year creating a net population increase of more than two million a decade.

 

The Home Secretary, ‘Billy’ Blunkett believes this does not matter. Last month, he said on TV that he perceives no particular upper limit at which the number of immigrants arriving in Britain would become un acceptable.

 

Some economists argue that immigration is not only essential to provide a 21st century work force for Britain when its population is ageing and the birth rate falling.

 

We shall return to the economic issue later, let us address first the Social one.

 

 

Politics is an ongoing debate about what kind of Britain we all wish to live in. It is a wholly legitimate part of this debate to consider which outsiders should not be admitted to the privilege of joining our society.

 

The Left argues that anyone opposed to large –scale immigration is, ipso facto, a racist. This is nonsense.

 

No country in the modern world can close its doors to all comers, and few sensible people wish to do so.

 

But it is entirely reasonable for any citizen to believe, and to exercise a right to declare publicly, that he or she wishes to live in a community dominated by people who share our historic culture and values.

 

It is plainly racist to object to the presence in Britain of any given individual merely because of their colour or creed.

 

It is not racist to argue that we must set limits upon how many people of alien cultures or creeds can enter Britain within a given time span without imposing intolerable strains on our society.

 

At a time when housing the British people is a crisis issue for this overcrowded Island, Sir Andrew Green’s Migration watch (the independent organisation set up to monitor immigration policy) estimates that an additional 1.1 million new homes will be

needed simply to provide roofs for immigrants

 

The Government’s arguments about Britain’s urgent need for immigrant labour seem spurious.

 

It is indeed possible that, 20 years from now, we shall want workers. We do not need them now. Young workers arriving in 2003 will already be ageing by the time even the most pessimistic labour studies perceive a real need for their services.

 

Given the desire of many British people to keep working past retirement age, even if we shall no longer be capable of heaving bricks on building sites, the need for immigrant labour a generation hence remains highly speculative.

 

So why does the Government continue to admit legal immigrants in increasing numbers and to make no serious effort to exclude illegal immigrants and asylum seekers.

 

First, on the issue of asylum seekers, ministers perceive themselves bowing to the inevitable. The physical difficulties of keeping them out are enormous because Britain has abandoned effective frontier controls.

 

The Government absolutely refuses to contemplate abrogating the half-century Human Rights Conventions as a preliminary to effective action. These are failures for which Ministers should be harshly judged if or when a major terrorist atrocity takes place in Britain.

 

Thanks to the reckless abdication of responsibility, the authorities no longer possess reliable knowledge of movements across our borders by terrorists, never mind immigrants.

Second, a deep-rooted instinct in favour of Immigration pervades the Labour benches of the House of Commons.

 

The liberal media almost daily highlight examples of asylum seekers who have allegedly been victimised by the Immigration authorities and threatened with expulsion to persecution in their home countries.

 

The traditional socialist view is that immigration is a good thing, which makes Britain a more diverse and vigorous society, and that better any number of illegal immigrants than for us to renounce our historic role as a sanctuary for the oppressed.

 

Unfortunately, the ranks of the allegedly oppressed around the world today include millions of economic migrants who simply want a better life.

 

The facility with which even the poorest people in the world can travel renders the old liberal open-door vision utterly unrealistic.

It is impossible for the rich democracies to accept all those who yearn to come and live in them. It was a reckless act by Tony Blair for which he deserves to face the political pillory to grant a right to work in Britain to 72 million citizens of the new European members of the EU.

 

I asked a Polish friend the other day about the mood in his country.

‘They are all just aching to leave,’ he answered laconically.

 

‘The moment they become EU members, the floodgates will open.’

 

It is not a reflection of paranoia to suggest a further reason for: Labour’s inertia about Mass Immigration: it promises a political windfall.

 

It plays a significant part in fulfilling Tony Blair’s long declared aspiration to change the face of Britain forever.

 

Very few newcomers to Britain are likely to vote Tory, to embrace the old middle –class values which those cafetiere new- agers Blair and Brown so despire.

 

For many years, immigrants will be instinctive Labour supporters, just as new arrivals in the US almost always become Democrats.

 

I do not suggest that Tony Blair welcomes immigrants to gain political advantage. I merely submit that his Government is not making any serious attempt to exclude them, partly because their coming is good news for his Party. A year or two ago, I was teasing an old friend, a former Cabinet Minister of famously liberal convictions. What would his attitude be today, I asked, if he had to address the issue of Immigration? His answer surprised me.

 

‘ I don’t feel comfortable about seeing large numbers of People coming to live in this country that not only do not share our values, but have not the slightest desire to do so.’ he said.

Here, in a nutshell, is the view of a great many of us. I was amazed to hear it articulated by a legendary liberal, even if he would have flinched from saying as much in public.

 Here, I think is the heaviest charge against the Government and its acolytes.

 

Far from encouraging immigrants to espouse our Traditional Values, Labour has fostered the pernicious cause of multi- culturism.

 

 

It has encouraged the view that anybody who comes to Britain can bring with them and establish in Hounslow or Reading or Coventry or Newcastle their own bit of India or Pakistan, Africa or Caribbean. This is the bit that sticks in the throats of millions of British People. Nobody expects the new arrivals, straight off the boat, will tuck into bed with Jane Austen or be able to recite within weeks a list of Marlborough’s battlefield triumphs over the French.

 

Yet it seems a wholly proper indeed essential, message to give to immigrants who come to Britain that they are welcome here if they come to share our lives, but not if they want to make a corner of England forever Bombay or Dhaka

 

It is monstrous that some English children have to learn Urdu in schools.

 

It is repugnant that the Labour Party

Appears willing in the name of multi-culturalism, to extend a tolerance to forced arranged marriages and the ritual slaughter of animals, which it denies to foxhunting.

 

Multi-Culturism does a huge disservice to immigrants themselves. Norman Tebbit’s suggested ‘cricket test’ was much derided and indeed abused when he proposed it.

 

His choose of words was ugly. But he made a Fundamental point that cannot be dismissed: the way to make immigration acceptable to the huge majority of British people, whose country this is, is to encourage immigrants to assimilate. National and social identities are precious possessions, which need reinforcement, not suppression.

 

If immigrants don’t want to celebrate Guy Fawkes’ Day or read the Canterbury Tales in school, then they might care to think of living somewhere else.

 

Of course, schools, institutions and public services must recognise the cultural and language problems of new immigrants. They should, however, be pursuing policies directed towards social integration, not

 

Separation.

 

On current trends, within a few years, children from ethnic minorities will outnumber whites in London’s schools.

 

‘White flight’ will accelerate this development, as the middle classes leave boroughs such as Southwark, Ealing, and Lambeth in search of lives for themselves and their children among what they perceive as ‘their own kind’ in other parts of the countryside.

 

Tony Blair’s Government is lying to the British People by suggesting that 250’000 immigrants a year is an acceptable or remotely desirable number if the stability and coherence of our society are to be maintained.

 

The only consequence of an influx on such a scale must be to increase popular resentment and hostility towards those who come.

 

Whatever Ken Livingston’s pollsters may tell him, millions of people remain determinedly English, children of the culture of Dickens and Trollope, Wellington at Waterloo and chocolate digestive biscuits.

Our London is – or was the City of Pepys and Pygmalion. The latest London Population survey is bad news not because many of the city’s new immigrants are bad people or unworthy citizens, but because their numbers have changed the character of the Capital without its Historic inhabitants being consulted about whether they wanted to live in an ‘exciting cultural melting pot’.

 

Immigration and its consequences should be at the forefront of political argument because they are matters of deep concern to millions of voters.

 

AS it is, however, when the LEFT is ready to attack even the excellent work of Sir Andrew Green’s Migrationwatch as a reflection of racism, many people feel obliged to vent their dismay and anger only behind closed doors.

 

The sooner the newly revived Conservative Party works out a policy on Immigration (and no more plans to invite mockery such as processing asylum seekers on off-shore islands, please Mr Howard) then the better for the health of the body politic.

 

We are not, thank goodness with ‘rivers of blood’ but we do face profound changes in our society, which this Government has no mandate to endorse. The British People care deeply about this, and are entitled to say so without embarrassment.’

EU member states are using violent and illegal tactics to force asylum seekers back across their borders as part of operations funded by the EU.

Evidence gathered by Lighthouse Reports, a non-profit organisation, reveals that migrants have been beaten and shot at in recent months during so-called “pushback” operations carried out by masked men in Croatia, Romania and Greece.

Although their clothing bears no insignia, these masked men are members of national police units which receive funding from the EU to patrol borders, according to the investigation, produced in partnership with Der Spiegel, SRF Rundshau and ARD.

The findings have fuelled concerns about Europe’s growing use of pushbacks – a form of deportation which violates EU law and the Geneva Refugee Convention – and the EU’s “complicity” with the practice.

It comes as the UK plans to start using pushback tactics in the English Channel, in a bid to force asylum seekers attempting to reach the UK on small boats back to France – which experts say will breach maritime laws and put migrants at severe risk.

In footage filmed on Croatian soil in June as part of the investigation, armed men wearing balaclavas can be seen beating Afghan and Pakistani asylum-seeking men with batons, forcing them into the river Korana to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

One of the masked people can be seen crashing his baton onto the men’s legs so that they stumble into the border river, where the water is chest-high, before shouting: “Go to Bosnia.”

In interviews with the migrants directly after the incident, they said they were from Afghanistan and Pakistan and that they requested asylum when they encountered Croatian police officers. They revealed marks left by the beatings on their bodies.

Analysis of the footage reveals that the masked men were equipped and had uniforms consistent with the Croatian riot police, which receive funding from the EU to assist with border security.

WHEN my colleagues and I began researching the attitudes of young British Muslims, we already suspected that some had become more religiously and politically committed over the past decade.

BUT our findings surprised us. While most Muslims feel a sense of belonging to Britain and are reasonably well integrated, there is a definite shift away from the mainstream among a growing number of younger Muslims.

[ At this point we would draw a parallel with many English children and others of other ages in our schools who complain that everyone else has a country whether from Poland or India or China or from any number of the 190 plus countries in the world today. Identity is important to promote a sense of belonging and loyalty to one's home whether adopted or not. Britishness an over used term introduced by newspaper proprietors  to replace the word ENGLAND which was in vogue for much of our past but particularly after the Second World War it did not fit in with those who decided British was Best!. This was strange as the term British is a geographical expression and NOT political -of course over 1500 years ago it was political but the English and their neighbours changed THAT!. It has been and still is a travesty that the word ENGLISH has been in decline for decades whereas the individual nation state whether Wales or Scotland in our island home has become the norm.]

They are more likely to prioritise allegiance to their religious community and be assertive about expressing their cultural difference. An increasing number express support for faith schools; say they would prefer to live under Muslim law, known as Sharia, and have become less tolerant about women's rights and homosexuality.

WHY? Are Muslims simply unable to adjust  to life in the West?

The answer to that is a firm No. After all, the first generation of Muslim immigrants largely adapted their religion and culture to suit life in Britain.

It is their children and grandchildren who are more strident about criticising British society and asserting their religious identity.  Many younger girls in Muslim communities will now wear the headscarf -the hijab-although many of their mothers do not. Slowly but surely, sections of the Muslim community are separating from the rest of Britain.

Instead of looking abroad to the influence of the Muslim world or the conflicts in the Middle East for an explanation, our research suggests that it lies closer to home. In particular, the

RISE OF MULTICULTURALISM.

Over the past two decades, with its stress on 'difference' and downgrading of Britishness has led many young Muslims to see themselves as separate from society.

Multicultural policies have effectively divided the population into ethnic and faith 'communities', each demanding its own identity as well as separate funding and resources.

This divisive approach has encouraged a kind of tribal thinking, where each group is encouraged to look after 'their own' In such a climate, younger have grown up believing that they have more in common with other Muslims than the wider population.

The weakening of collective identities through attacks on British traditions and history and the decline in old-style working class politics has led to a vacuum in which many young Muslims have turned to religion to seek a sense of belonging.

This emphasis on difference has also cultivated a powerful sense of victim hood. Instead of demanding equality anti-racist groups since the 1980's have been demanding the right to be different and 'respect' for cultural identities.

Muslim lobby groups have been particularly successful at claiming that Muslims need special protection by exaggerating the problem of Islamophobia and demanding curbs on free speech.

 

But instead of making Muslims safer and more included, these demands have only made younger Muslims feel more alienated.

Paradoxically telling Muslims that they are vulnerable and need to be listened to has only made them feel more like outsiders who cannot be expected to handle criticism like everyone else. Although younger Muslims are far less likely than their parents to be victims of racist abuse, they are more sensitive about the slightest criticism or attack.

 

EVEN WORSE, by trying to engage with Muslims through 'community leaders' (who are considered by most Muslims to be largely unrepresentative), the Government is sending the message:

'You lot are so different, we just do not know how to talk to you ourselves.'

This has meant that many younger Muslims who feel unrepresented by their community leaders feel even more ignored and excluded, because the Government is listening to them in the WRONG WAY.

The Government must stop emphasising difference and engage Muslims as citizens, not through their religious identity. The 'Muslim community' is not homogeneous. People should be entitled to equal treatment as citizens in the public realm, with the freedom to enjoy their religious identities in the private sphere

THE negative effects of MULTICULTURALISM are also experienced by many other groups, including white people who have been encouraged to feel ashamed of

THEIR COUNTRY.

We need to revive a sense of shared purpose and confidence in British society. Islamism is only one expression of a wider cultural problem of self-loathing and confusion in the West. There are signs that people in general feel alienated and are increasingly retreating to their cultural or ethnic backgrounds. This is the driving force behind a rising interest in regional identities among the Scottish, Welsh and English.

We need to bring to an end to the institutional attacks on NATIONAL IDENTITY

-the cancellation of Christian festivities, the bans on displays of national symbols and the sometimes crude anti-western bias of history lessons -which can create feelings of defensiveness and resentment.

 

We should allow people to express their identity freely in a climate of genuine toleration. Society needs to work together to assert our shared British identity and Western values in a way that will inspire the younger generation -from all backgrounds.

[Shortly before the 1997 General Election a BBC reporter arrived to question us and the first question was what did we think of MULTICULTURALISM.  Our reply was that we believed in each individual from wherever they came form and that when people arrived in England their first breath of English air was of FREEDOM which was a statement made by the Chief Justice of England to the case of a captured slave in a ship in English waters.  So it is that when anyone arrives in our country they have FULL RIGHTS secured by the Rights and Liberties which have been fought for in England for over 1500 years. The curse of multiculturalism was known as a community wreaking policy years ago but was a useful instrument of many politicians to ingratiate themselves with newcomers to secure their votes- need we say more. ]

The Editor believes that we can pay no better tribute to the late Enoch Powell than to quote at length from the stirring speech he gave to the

Royal Society of St. George at a dinner in London on 22nd April 1961.
 

"…we find them, or seem to find them, in many a village church, beneath the tall tracery of a perpendicular East window and the coffered ceiling of the chantry chapel. From brass and stone, from line and effigy, their eyes look out at us, and we gaze into them, as if we would win some answer from their silence.
 

"Tell us what it is that binds us together; show us the clue that leads through a thousand years; whisper to us the secret of this charmed life of England, that we in our time may know how to hold it fast."
What would they say? They would speak to us in our own English tongue, the tongue made for telling truth in, tuned already to songs that haunt the hearer like the sadness of spring. They would tell us of that marvellous land, so sweetly mixed of opposites in climate that all the seasons of the year appear there in their greatest perfection; of the fields amid which they built their halls, their cottages, their churches, and where the same blackthorn showered its petals upon them as upon us; they would tell us, surely, of the rivers, the hills and of the island coasts of England.
They would tell us too of a palace near the great city which the Romans built at a ford of the River Thames, to which men resorted out of all England to speak on behalf of their fellows, a thing called "Parliament," and from that hall went out men with fur-trimmed gowns and strange caps on their heads, to judge the same judgements, and dispense the same justice, to all the people of England. One thing above all they assuredly would not forget, Lancastrian or Yorkist, squire or lord, priest or layman; they would point to the kingship of England, and its emblems everywhere visible.
Symbol, yet source of power; person of flesh and blood, yet incarnation of an idea; the kingship would have seemed to them, as it seems to us, to express the qualities that are peculiarly England's: the unity of England, effortless and unconstrained, which accepts the unlimited supremacy of Crown in Parliament so naturally as not to be aware of it; the homogeneity of England, so profound and embracing that the counties and the regions make it a hobby to discover their differences and assert their peculiarities;
the continuity of England, which has brought this unity and this homogeneity about by the slow alchemy of centuries.
For the unbroken life of the English nation over a thousand years and more is a phenomenon unique in history, the product of a specific set of circumstances like those which in biology are supposed to start by chance a new line of evolution. Institutions which elsewhere are recent and artificial creations appear in England almost as works of nature, spontaneous and unquestioned. The deepest instinct of the Englishman - how the word "instinct" keeps forcing itself in again and again! - is for continuity;
he never acts more freely nor innovates more boldly than when he is most conscious of conserving or even of reacting.
From this continuous life of a united people in its island home spring, as from the soil of England, all that is peculiar in the gifts and the achievements of the English nation. All its impact on the outer world - in earlier colonies, in the later Pax Britannica, in government and lawgiving, in commerce and in thought - has flowed from impulses generated here. And this continuing life of England is symbolised and expressed, as by nothing else, by the English kingship. English it is for all the leeks and thistles grafted upon it here and elsewhere. The stock that received all these grafts is English, the sap that rises through it to the extremities rises from roots in English earth, the earth of England's history.
We in our day ought well to guard, as highly to honour, the parent stem of England, and its royal talisman; for we know not what branches yet that wonderful tree will have the power to put forth. The danger is not always violence and force; them we have withstood before and can again. The peril can also be indifference and humbug, which might squander the accumulated wealth of tradition and devalue our sacred symbolism to achieve some cheap compromise or some evanescent purpose.”

SADLY THERE ARE MANY INSTANCES IN THE PAST AND NO DOUBT IN THE PRESENT AND FUTURE OF THE  HISTORY OF THE WORLD WHERE THE VERY EXISTENCE OF A PARTICULAR PEOPLE AND COUNTRY WILL BE OBLITERATED FROM HISTORY IN THE YEARS AHEAD.  WE HAVE CALLED FOR THE ENGLISH CUSTOM-LAW-RELIGION-CONSTITUTION TO BE EMBEDDED INTO THE LAW OF THE ENGLISH CONSTITUTION AT WESTMINSTER - A MOVE WHICH THE FOUNDERS OF THE USA WISELY MADE A MATTER OF THE LAW OF THE CONSTITUTION.  BUT OUR CONSTANT REMINDERS TO FOLLOW THEIR EXAMPLE HAS BEEN IGNORED OVER THE PAST 20 YEARS. WE HAVE RECENTLY BEEN INFORMED BY THE DAILY MAIL THAT THERE ARE NOW WELL OVER 9 MILLION IMMIGRANTS THAT WE KNOW OF IN OUR MOST CROWDED AND  ONE OF THE MOST POPULATED COUNTRY'S IN THE WORLD.

Robbing the POOR to help the RICH.

 

Despite the aspirations of Social Europe there is

 NO EVIDENCE

-that EU policies help the POOR – if anything the reverse is the Case.

 

Economic convergence between regions and EU countries has always been the goal of the European Union.

 

Ministers of member countries and members of the Commission have consequently reiterated their desire to use EU funds to help the least well –off by closing the gap between the poorest regions and countries and the richest.

 

More recently they have declared their intention to assist the ten members admitted in 2004 in catching up economically with the EU -15.  Members of the UK government, desperate to identify an EU achievement, have highlighted the ‘success’ of EU enlargement and its economic impact on Eastern and central Europe.

 

Professed Goal

 

Together with other data and information the EU’s annual publication Allocation of expenditure by member state, published last month, helps us reach an answer to the question:

 

‘Has the EU lived up to its professed goal of helping the poor?

 

The picture is a complex one but there is a strong case for saying that far from redistributing money from rich to poor the EU operates in such a way as to achieve the opposite.

 

The bulk of the EU’s income comes from contributions from members according to a formula based on national income; those, in turn come from taxation.  The structure is such that most tax revenue comes from relatively poor people and those on average incomes  - simply because there happen to be many more of them than there are high earners; the very rich – the Abramoviches and the Bransons, of course, usually manage their affairs in such a way as to avoid paying tax altogether.

 

 

WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?

 

As the European Union Financial Report 2005 demonstrates, nearly half the EU budget still goes on AGRICULTURE.

 

Incredibly, total farm spending rose by 11 per cent last year.

 

WHO RECEIVED IT?

As the result of work by campaigning journalists and NGOs we know that the vast majority of the funds go to large landowners – such as

 

PRINCE CHARLES

 

Crown Prince of Monaco

 

Ted Turner

 

Duke of Westminster etc –and to large scale agri-businesses such as Nestle. 

 

THE QUEEN.

 

There have also been embarrassing revelations about the receipt of CAP funds by MINISTERS and their families.

 

But even in France , which receives one in five of the EUROS allocated under CAP, only a modest trickle of funds reaches small farmers with 60 per cent of income going to the 14 biggest French farm companies, according to figures published by OXFAM in October 2005.

 

In as far as these transactions represent a redistribution of wealth it is from the

RELATIVELY POOR to the VERY RICH.

Rapid Growth

 

If there is no reason to believe that EU membership assists poor individuals can it be argued that it boosts the economic growth of the poorest states?

 

EU countries which were relatively poor such as Ireland and Spain at the time of accession plainly have grown more rapidly than established members, although the economic policies pursued by Spain under Aznar and by Ireland under successive governments, appear to have been the most significant factors in their growth. Other countries which were relatively poor at the time of accession notably Greece and Portugal, have grown less rapidly.

 

 

ALL the EU ‘10’ are net beneficiaries in terms of the EU budget but it is striking how little they received in 2005 in relation to the EU ‘15’ In terms of allocated expenditure the 15  ‘old’ member states received $87 billion gross (89.4 per cent) while the new members received only $9 billion (10.6 per cent).

 

Four ‘old’ member states –Germany, France Spain and Italy-each received more than the ten new states taken together.

 

The figures are more striking in per capita terms.  In 2005 the EU spent $227 per capita on the old members but only $123 on the EU ‘10’

 

Same Criteria

 

These figures will change. Eventually the new members will receive funds from the CAP according to the same criteria as the other members which will inevitably affect total receipts from the EU, but by this time those criteria will also have changed and it is consequently very difficult to make a judgment about how well they will do in future. Last year, however they received only 7.7 per cent of total CAP payments.

 

When it comes to pay-outs from the EU’s structural funds the ten newcomers received only 5.5 per cent of the funds compared to

 

Spain (24.4 per cent)

 

Germany (14.1 per cent)

 

Italy (13.2 per cent)

 

Poland, the member state with the highest unemployment received only 4.2 per cent of the EU’s allocated expenditure despite the fact that its population of 38 million represents 8.3 per cent of the EU population and that it faces the biggest structional problems in Europe.

 

EUROPHILES might argue that membership is good in itself, pointing to the relatively high growth rates of new members , both since joining and in the preparatory period.  But some European and Eurasian economies that remain outside the EU grew just as quickly during this period; the crucial factors appear to have been privatisation following the collapse of communism and the level of foreign inward in vestment.   Moreover, the new members have had to meet the demands of the acquis and have consequently had to meet a dramatic increase in regulatory costs.

 

 Given all of this, it will be a long time before it is possible for the EU ‘10’ to make objective cost-benefit analysis of EU membership.

 

What is clear is despite Europe’s much vaunted social conscience how much members get out of the EU depends on their political clout and their ability to work the system; there is no evidence that the EU has done well by the poor or that decision –makers have been greatly swayed by the desire to help them.

EU to ignore British objections over business tax.

 

[Well from the very beginning of the UK ‘s entrance into the EU with the aggressive support of the CBI back in 1970’s and even in the recent North East regional vote which turned then down they are now vociferous in their pronouncements as to the unfairness of the EU.  But for the fact that their predicament affects us ALL we would say you made your bed now you must lie in it even if it gets uncomfortable and expensive.]

 

Plans to create a pan-European corporate tax system are to go ahead – despite the opposition of Britain and six other EU member states, according to Laszlo Kovacs, the EU tax commissioner.

 

Like the euro or the Schengen agreement on internal borders the scheme could be adopted by a  limited group of countries he said in an interview with the Financial Times on 6th October -2006.

 

Mr Kovacs said he was determined to overcome both the technical and political obstacles in the way of the scheme which involves a common consolidated business tax base. Currently this had the strong support of ten member countries and the “cautious support” of eight….

 

In an interview with the Sunday telegraph on 6th October 2006 Nicolas Sarkozy, the French interior minister and presidential hopeful called for EU –wide taxes to pay for EU expenditure.

One needs to be aware that over the past 12 years the EU accounts have NOT BEEN PASSED by their accountants.

Despite the drive fore greater transparency many countries, like germany, refuse to name the individual recipients, or like France and Britain, release only partial information.  The exact destination of the bulk of the funds consequently remains a mystery

 

[As does much in the despotic unaccountable corrupt (their accounts were turned down for the 12th year running by their accountants  - possibly the Germans need to top –up their BND slush fund and what an opportunity there is with the lots of money from the British taxpayer who is so easy with their money that they permitted their great leader Tony to give back the 7-10 billion Rebate last year which a TRUE BLUE prime minister obtained by waving her heavy handbag with a completed Bill which the EU did not want cashing.  But the present prolific waster of the heavy taxed Britons but particularly the ENGLISH said his goodbye with a golden handshake to his friends in the EU. What a load of loafers we are to have permitted this  and much else that has happened in New Labour Britain over the past nine years.

Enjoy yourself with the busybodies who will shortly want to visit your house to access your wealth and ability to fit solar panels while the Industrial countries of the world look on amused while they replace every saving we make with a twenty fold increase in carbons and laugh themselves to the BANK.

MADE TO FEEL GUILTY ABOUT OUR IDENTITY?

 Over the past decade or so there has been a stark change in the way the majority of people in these islands see themselves.

Whereas most living south of Hadrian’s Wall and east Offa’s Dyke used to consider themselves ‘British’, they now consider themselves, instead ‘English’

 

After all, thanks to the cynical devolution policies of our Scottish- dominated Government, the Kingdom is no longer United. ‘Great Britain’ is a geographical term rather than a political fact.

 

And the English, more than five-sixths of the British people, have been bombarded with ostentatious displays of Scots nationalism and Welsh separation -both phenomena for which the English taxpayer is still having to shell out.

 Little wonder, with the Celtic fringe making it clear to the English that they would rather not be associated with us except financially, that we have reassessed our own identity.

 

And little wonder that this should inspire Englishmen such as Tony Bennett, landlord of the Otter pub in Thorpe Marriott, Norfolk, to seek to celebrate St George’s Day this Saturday in a traditional English fashion: with longer drinking hours.

 

Mr Bennett had already successfully obtained an extension to celebrate the Chinese New Year. And he has been assured that, had he applied for an extension to mark St Patrick’s Day, or The Hindu feast of Diwali, he would have been granted one.

 

However, when he sought permission to allow English men and women to celebrate the feast of St. George, Norwich magistrates turned him down. St George’s Day, Mr Bennett was informed by magistrate Roy Church, simply isn’t ‘special’ enough.

 

As an Englishman, I greatly respect the culture and economic contribution that the Welsh, Scottish, Irish, and other minorities such as Asians have made to this country.

 

But throughout the General Election campaign, several prominent politicians have, in search for votes, made the questionable assertion that a ‘diverse’ society-it is no longer politically-correct to talk of a ‘multi-cultural’ one - is better than a monocultural one.

 

This is the prevailing mood among the small out- of- touch clique who rule our country, those who fawn on them, and those who take orders from them.

 

The English, owning as they do the majority culture, are whipping boys for this obsession with diversity. You cannot, after all imagine a less diverse human being than the white, middle-aged male Mr Bennett, swathed in his St. George’s flag, and fulfilling one of the oldest and important functions known to English society: selling ale in his pub.

 

It is all right to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, because the Irish are a historically oppressed minority. A faintly similar case, far more laughable can be made for the feasts of St. Andrew and St.David.

 

And when it comes to celebrating the Chinese New Year, or Diwali, or Ramadan (unlikely, I know, but I include it for the sake of ‘diversity’), the English Establishment can find no objections at all.

 After all, these people are genuine ethnic minorities, the obvious victims of prejudice.

 English politicians and magistrates can thus demonstrate their post-imperial guilt by sanctioning whatever celebrations of such feast days may be required, and taking the much- needed opportunity for some self flagellation about being English into the bargain.

Might there be in the future a case for UDI- A Unilateral Demand for Independence by a major conurbation -such as Leicester or Bradford or a number of other cities who will be completely in the hands of those who consider they owe no allegiance to our country.

 

Even today there are ‘No-Go areas’ in all but name where the police keep a very low profile and leave the communities to their own clan leaders.

 

This could all have been avoided if only those peoples from the world who wished to assimilate into our community where accepted with tight control of numbers so that the new peoples are dispersed over the greater part of the country and not creating ghettoes.

In order to ensure a trouble free progress into the EU Superstate it was vital for ALL Governments to encourage the politically-correct notions in order to neuter the English people - after all they are a kindly people who will stand anything rather than complain that they have been badly treated. ITV's political Editor who spent nine years at the corporation. accused the BBC of not being impartial and said it had neglected the effect' the EU was having on British families.

FRUSTRATION over Scotland's addiction to English subsidies has boiled over with a poll showing a majority in favour of ending the UNION.

For the first time, voters on both sides  of the border back Scottish independence and an end to the political merger agreed nearly three centuries ago.

 

The findings are a serious blow to Gordon Brown. The Chancellor, a Scot, is expected to succeed Tony Blair as Prime Minister next year despite pressure from campaigners who resent Scotland's influence in English affairs.

He made an impassioned appeal for the UNION on Saturday as Labour tried to Fight off a serious challenge from the Scottish National Party.

Worryingly for Mr Brown, the survey found neatly two out of three people in England believe higher public spending in Scotland is unjustified.

A long standing Treasury spending formula gives Scotland 20 per cent more to spend per head pf population than is available in England.

Earlier this month a similar ICM  poll for The Scotsman  newspaper found 51 per cent of Scots wanted to break away from England, for the first time a majority has been recorded since 1998 when Scottish Parliament was established.

Mr Brown admitted 'there is a debate to be had about the future of the [Supposed] United Kingdom' but added the countries were 'stronger together and weaker apart'.

[The following letters to the Editor of the Daily Telegraph -Dec., 13-2006 -explain the full anger of members of the population to the further destruction of the vital organs which serve the body of the communities.]

 

SIR- A man kicked to death outside Henley police station as it reported that 900 stations have been closed.  Thousands more rural post offices are to be shut. Our Armed Forces are imperfectly equipped for the wars to which the Government has committed them. Gangs of feral youths roam the streets. Britain is in social collapse due to the decline in traditional family values.

 

WHY?

It's because a financially incompetent welfare state and a political determination not to be judgmental about wayward sections of society have destroyed the fabric of this once great nation. This will go on doing so unless a political leadership emerges with the courage to tackle the problem.

 

If this is to be the Conservatives, they need to emerge from the New closet in which they have been skulking for the past year, ..."'Don't Talk, Fix it"

SIR- The Closure of police stations is yet another issue that is dealt with through spin rather than honesty.

The reality of the 24-hour police stations is that they provide reassurance to residents and the fact that patrolling officers come in and out of the premises at various times means that there is a guaranteed visible police presence in the local area. When these premises are closed officers may be based a significant distance away and local police will have to rely on a chance patrol to see a police officer.

The next issue for spin rather than substance will be police community support officers, just about the only visible "police" presence in my area. it won't be long before the Government presents these well-meaning, but under trained (when compared with police constables) officers as an integral part of overall police numbers on the streets.

SIR- There used to be two sub-post offices within a reasonable walking and cycling distance of my home. They were of course killed off by the Government. Now I must drive a considerable distance to a shopping centre wherein now lies our nearest post office.

This office is overwhelmed with customers -the queues are long and slow. Fortunately, as we stand patiently in line , we are entertained by an overhead television screen showing advertisements for mail services and displaying the proud message

"The Post Office - serving you at the heart of your community"

Real services have been replaced by media spin. Joined up Government in action

SIR- Our police station in Oxted became part-time a few years ago; about the same time as the crime rate went up.

Recently we had our first armed bank raid in Oxted High Street at midday. We have more chance of seeing a traffic warden than a policeman.

No wonder MORALE is LOW in the POLICE FORCE in October 2021. Their vital service of PROTECTION OF THE CITIZEN  has been reduced to such a dangerous level  so that the CRIMINAL has no FEAR and no doubt looks forward to a  comfortable stay in one of HER MAJESTY'S PRISONS for a well earned rest and midnight banquets and no doubt if in an OPEN PRISON which many take an obvious invitation  to abscond, to return to their criminal activities ,knowing the their chances of being apprehended by the traditional 'BOBBIE-ON-THE-BEAT' was long past. AS for POLICE STATIONS they have been disappearing at an alarming rate for many years and those which still remain  (Our local police station in Warwick was closed 2 years ago) and if our now nearest police station is any example they now resemble STRONGHOLDS with access no longer an easy walk up to the entrance but now more in keeping with the tight security measures one would expect to see in an entrance to  a BANK VAULT.

The present ill-judged campaign to hound the POLICE SERVICE  is ILL-ADVISED whatever the circumstances  - because in the FIRST RESORT it is the GOVERNMENT OF THE DAY with their responsibility to the CITIZEN to ensure that the SAFETY OF THE CITIZEN and THE REALM are the FIRST! most IMPORTANT measures of any truly DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT.

I think it was around five hours after I had arrested Keith for pulling his wife's phone out of its socket that I saw the advert in Police Review: Edmonton Police Service were seeking experienced officers.

Keith was drunk, and loud, and banging repeatedly on his cell door; in short, he was driving me crackers. So I registered my interest with the Canadians.

I didn't apply just because of Keith, though he was beginning to try my patience. I've arrested hundreds of men like him since I joined the British police four years ago -  foul-mouthed, petulant juvenile yobs, drunk on their own self-importance and 10 pints lager.

My real motivation -aside from the chance of an interesting holiday for me and my wife when I flew over for the interviews and tests - was to see if policing was any different in

ALBERTA.

AND IT WAS HUGELY SO.

I went on  a 'ride-along' with a couple of Edmonton policemen and, on the surface, everything was familiar.

The officers were polite and professional, there were  the same calls to the same domestics and just as they are in Britain. 80 per cent of the callers were either insane or drunk. (there were nuances: their drug of choice is crystal meth rather than heroin, they drink Molson instead of White Lightning and they favour  mullet over the skinhead.

However, you didn't have to scratch very deep to find the differences For starters, after the briefing we all went out on patrol.

JUST LIKE THAT!

Not two or three out, with the rest doing paperwork

 

NO! -

THE WHOLE SHIFT WENT OUT TO LOOK FOR CRIMINALS.

 

It wasn't long before we found one, either:

a drunken 15-year-old with a knife.. Over here, if you arrest a drunken 15-year-old with a knife,

THE PAPERWORK WILL TIE YOU UP FOR THE REST OF THE SHIFT.

In Edmonton -Alberta, we'd charged the junior and taken him home to his mum within an hour.

I tried explaining how long it would all take back home [in England] Their response:

Gee, how do you guys ever solve anything?

QUITE.

Policing in England is about recording and risk assessing. Thousands of front-line officers are fighting a battle simply to

Consequently the entry tests consist of little more than checking for a pulse, asking if the applicant is a racist and getting them to spell "diversity" correctly.

 In Edmonton I had to undergo two days of polygraph interviews and fitness tests.

Unfortunately for you, the people who are going are young, front-line officers, those with between four and seven years experience.

They're the one's who arrive at your house after 5pm on the Friday or deal with the lunatics at chucking out-time.

I think the Government needs to ponder this question very seriously:

WHEN EVEN THE POLICE START LEAVING THE COUNTRY, IS IT TIME TO ADMIT WE HAVE PROBLEMS?

I always liked being a copper. I never was a high flyer on course for the top. I was just one of many trying to keep a lid on things. And despite the problems affecting policing in Britain, you can still rest assured that the constable who turns up when you ring is one of the best in  the world:

perhaps not the best -led, and certainly not the best-equipped, but a dedicated professional.

I'm proud to have served alongside such men and women. I'm just sad when I think how much more we could achieve if we were allowed to get out from behind our desks.

According to the Home Office, it was deemed to be 'not statistically significant' [in other words it was too damaging to publish]

REALLY? The Government should try explaining that to the victims of its shameful [disastrous, damaging and dangerous and demented ]reform.

[We relate the case of an elderly couple -the wife partially deaf and the husband with terminal cancer who were robbed of hundreds of pounds by bogus Water Board yobs  last year and have been in the past  the victims of louts throwing refuse into their garden . For some time now in the early hours of the morning a particular individual leaving the local pub has the habit of sitting on the pavement with his large back against the wooden fence and shout obscenities. Up to a few weeks ago three fences are in need of replacement. When we suggested to the widow now alone (her husband had only recently died of that cancer) that we would write to the Chief Constable on her behalf to ask him to monitor the antics of those leaving the public house just across the road from her house she said:

'Please do not do that as I am very worried that they will make more trouble for me.'

 So all we can do is watch and see criminal damage being done. There are millions of people who are suffering from the 24-hour drinking madness which was supposed to make drinkers conform to the continental pattern and reduce the distress of the householder who no longer has the traditional Bobbie- on- the -Beat to fend off the troublemakers.

The area in which this incident took place was given 2 police constables and 4 CPO's not very long ago. Many local people have never seen any of them particularly in the early hours when their presence would reduce the nuisance. The noise still continues well into the night.

What we would have given to have the likes of PC Copperfield patrolling our neighbourhood but of course he would not have been allowed to neglect his paperwork and that would be the end of our dreams.

 

THOSE MPs THAT PASSED THIS LEGISLATION HAVE A LOT TO ANSWER FOR.]

PUTTING extra police on the beat, cuts violent crime, robbery and burglary, figures showed yesterday.

 

The areas of London flooded with officers after the July terror attacks recorded a drop in such offences.

 

Experts said the data proved that increasing Bobbies on the beat deters criminals.

 

In the wake of the attacks, the Metropolitan Police put up to 4,000 officers on the streets of Central London at one time, including 3,000 who are armed.

 

Dramatic cuts in street crime and burglary were logged for these areas in July, compared to the same month last year.

 

In Camden, robbery was cut by 12.2 % and burglary by 8.2%.

 

Westminster recorded a 30.2% cut in burglary and a 6.9% drop in robbery.

 

This compared with increases in the London area as a whole, where violence was up 4.1 %, robbery up 22.8% and burglary 4.7%.

 

Crime expert David Green director of the Civitas think-tank, said the police response to the terror attacks had provided an ‘accidental experiment.’

 

He added: 

 

‘It reinforces the case for a proper policing policy’

 

Norman Brennan, of the Victims of Crime Trust, said:

 

‘The problem is that the numbers put on the streets following July7 are simply not sustainable. What we need now is a huge increase in police’ [Bobbies on the Beat]

 

Mr Brennan added that slashing police paperwork could also boost numbers on the beat.

 

Government statistics show police are spending 53% of their time on frontline duties.  The rest is spent stuck behind desks or attending court.

 

Mr Green added that the figures showed officers could not be concentrated in one area. Six outlying London boroughs had a 50 % jump in muggings in July compared with last year.

 

In Waltham Forest street robberies were up 92.7%.

 

[The above figures prove what we have been saying for many years that there is a need for the local bobbie to be returned to the beat where he CAN become familiar with his patch and prevent crime, which some Chief Constables say, is NOT possible.  But the events in London since 7/7 show a different picture.]

Commander Simon Foy, the Met’s head of performance, said:

 

‘After the 7 July and 21 July attacks we had a responsibility to have a huge police presence in Central London.’

 

[We ask the WHY the Metropolitan Police Chief Sir Ian Blair said after the bombings that the 3000 officers sent to Edinburgh to protect the most protected man in the world had NOT been a problem for London at the time.]

The Independent Police Complaints Commission announced an Independent Inquiry last night into the leaks from the Jean Charles de Menezes investigation.

 

Bill Taylor, formally Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary for Scotland, will look into how documents from the Commission’s inquiry found their way into the media.

 

It follows the publication of letters to the Home Secretary from the Police Federation calling for an inquiry into the leaks.

 

[What we are sure is far more interesting to receive will be the Report on the run-up to and aftermath of July 7 in respect of the actions or otherwise of the Metropolitan Police Chief Sir Ian Blair and others under his command.]

Crime On My Doorstep

 

A correspondent to the Letters COLUMN Of the

 Daily Mail on September 6, 2005  from a concerned citizen in Essex.

IN HIS first statement on arriving in Office in July, our new Police Chief told criminals visiting Essex to

 

‘Bring their toothbrushes because they won’t be going home’ (Mail).

 

He ordered his officers to arrest at least 600 criminals in his first week in charge.

[JULY]

 

On Thursday, August 4, after 11pm, a young man was stabbed as he walked home.  Fleeing from his attackers, he arrived at our front door, cornered by a gang of youths. 

 

My husband managed to get him inside as his assailants kicked at our front door shattering the glass with a heavy plant top.

 

My husband was threatened through the broken window, but managed to hold the door shut.

 

Meanwhile, I relayed all this to the 999 operator, explaining that we had two young children in the house.

 

The victim was bleeding profusely from a stab wound and my husband had no doubt that had he not opened the door that night, this 17-year old boy would have been seriously injured or killed by the gang, who ran off once they realised the police had been called.

Half an hour after the incident, we had a phone call from police to say there had been a sweep of the area but no one was found.

TWENTY MINUTES later another phone call said there was ‘concern for welfare’ in Benfleet and we would have to wait longer.

A police car eventually arrived two hours after the Attack

 

By which time my husband had taken the young man to Accident & Emergency.  The two officers spoke to me briefly of ABH, GBH, even attempted murder, I pointed out possible evidence on the front door.

 

I wasn’t expecting Helen Mirren and her swarm of forensic experts

 

But I thought at least I’d hear something.

 

Weeks later no one contacted my husband and no one had been to see if there is any evidence on our front door.

 DO YOU remember the 1980 Olympic Games? Probably not. But they were a major political event because the U.S. called for a boycott of the Great Moscow event - which 59 other countries followed, but not us, I am glad to say.

 The protest arose because the Soviet Union had - Oh, the horror of it! - sent troops into Afghanistan. Such wickedness could not be forgiven.

 

The Russians offered the excuse that their intervention had been asked for by the Afghan president (that rings a bell somewhere?). But of course, such feeble justification was not going to be accepted by the U.S. and its best friends. Vietnam, did I hear you say? Oh well, that was different.

 In the event, the Soviet Afghanistan intervention was such a failure and so unpopular among Russians that it made a major contribution to the collapse of Communism.

In the pot-and-kettle context, I was looking recently at some of the exchanges during the Big Three meetings in 1945 to plan a brave new world. The U.S. and Britain were insisting that there should be proper elections in Eastern Europe. An interesting view said Molotov, and the Soviet Foreign Minister asked what were we planning to do about Franco’s Spain.

 But Spain was a major British trading partner, was Churchill’s rather weak retort. Whether Molotov produced one of his icy smiles at that point is not recorded.

 British and American protests about Soviet behaviour in Eastern Europe were also met by Molotov’s comments about human rights being violated in Greece - where Britain was aiding the Greek Right and against the Greek Left.

 Our side insisted that such a claim was a complete distortion of the truth. Were could he have got such information from? The British Press, responded Molotov.

 But we must not stray too far from Afghanistan, which is where disaster now lies. A British military contingent about the size of the police force of Wales is expected to control an area of similar size. To do so when hostility comes only from local warlords would be difficult enough.

 With the expectation that the region will draw in Muslim fanatics from other countries, it is hopeless. The country is made for guerrilla warfare with its mountains, caves, ravines and primitive roads.

 As the casualties start to mount -as they will

the public, already disillusioned about IRAQ, will want us to disengage. As we must. For we may face the slow death of the BRITISH ARMY

-one of the few institutions these days, which commands national and international admiration.

 

Iraq has been a brutal wound. Afghanistan could be mortal. Recruitment figures are liable to collapse.

 

But do not look to the Official Opposition for help. Already discredited by support for the Iraq war, the Tory Front Bench offers supine support for the

GOVERNMENT.

 Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague, normally a sensible man, prates about our ‘building’ a country alongside the Americans.

 

Shadow Defence Secretary Liam Fox talks of the ‘construction of a free and democratic Afghanistan’. [Well in England in particular many people would be appreciative if that was true in their country] But the first instinct of the Afghans must be that they should not be ruled or controlled by foreigners. [Well as the Press and Media have aired recently we have the same problem in England].

 Fox adds sonorously that:

‘We cannot fail to act and we cannot act and fail’ (I am working on that.)

 One wonders if the politicians have the slightest understanding of that country, its people or its tribal rivalries. Even the writ of the elected president does not run far outside Kabul and not much there.

 A riot in the city a week ago, after an accident involving an American vehicle, left eight dead and 100 injured. It could be more than that, agitators proclaim to a population all too ready to believe the worst.

 The Tories believe it is their duty at all times to stand by our armed forces whatever the conflict. This is ludicrously short-sighted.

 

If they want to support the Army, they should resist it being given impossible tasks.

Face ‘human shields’

British soldiers taking part in the biggest coalition offensive in Afghanistan told yesterday how the Taliban fighters had used women and children as ‘human shields.

Paratroopers revealed how they had to give pursuit of insurgents after coming under fire. Corporal Quinton Poll, a 29-year-old section commander with A Company of 3 Para, said:

 

‘I followed the gunman into a house and he started pushing women and children towards me.’

 ‘We know who we’re dealing with. But when you find out they are using human shields, you are just surprised.’

The troops came under fire as they arrived by helicopter in the remote mountain town of Nowzad as part of the U.S led Operation Mountain thrust, the biggest drive against militants since the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

The 11,000-strong coalition force of American, British, Canadian and Afghan troops have killed nearly 100 Taliban in recent days. But yesterday Taliban units retaliated, killing more than 30 civilians and abducting a dozen more. The firefight, which took place earlier this month, was part of the first major battle British troops faced since moving to southern Afghanistan this year.

 Details of the fight are only now becoming public after troops involved met reporters at a British base in Helmand province.

Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Tootal, the British battle group commander, sad his troops were ambushed by more than 50 Taliban operating in small groups. More than 20 Taliban were killed, while British forces sustained only minor injuries [?]

 He said the outcome of battles such as the clash at Nowzad could determine the success of a new Nato force now taking over security for southern Afghanistan.

‘I’d like to think it sent a message to the Taliban that they might want to think twice about attacking us again,’ he said.

 

But the commander insisted that winning hearts and minds was paramount.

He said:

 ‘If every day we could go out and improve the lot of the Afghan people, that would have a far greater effect than killing Taliban’

[Well he would have to say that for morale but the fact is they were taken in an ambush, which the terrain easily facilitates, and it will happen on a regular basis because the Taliban are the defenders of their own territory and the Afghan people are no different to any other people in wanting the invader to leave THEIR COUNTRY.

The only result that will be accomplished will be a regular flight of body bags to the UK and the injured - many for life - and the distress of their families and friends.]

The Islamic Jihad of the 7th to 10th centuries over-ran half of the then Christian World by the sword. Today, many western Muslims are peaceful and law-abiding, and those who are faithful to the Quran and to the Hadith may well stand beside Christians in campaigns against Materialism and immorality.

Equally, they can take the view that the decadent 'Christian' west is regarded as Dar-al-Harb (house of war). pagan and irredeemable. Only jihad, in the latter view, will bring 'peace' by the establishment of a new Khilafah (a Muslim state) worldwide and by the abolition of national boundaries to result in Izhaar ud-Deen (world domination by Islam).

Islamic states are at the forefront of persecution of Christians, a fact well documented by Operation Mobilisation, Barnabas Fund, Christian Solidarity and Frontline Fellowship amongst other Christian groups.  This topic alone would warrant a book about it and there is truly no space here to begin to do the subject the justice it deserves.

Even in non-Muslim countries, Islam shows its aggressive side, and this is putting the bombings in places like New York, Bali, Madrid, London and Israel on one side.  In Nigeria, Muslims are advancing Sha'ria and persecuting Christians, driving them out of Muslim areas by force of arms. In Australia, Muslims used the State of Victoria's Anti-Vilification Law to persecute Paster Daniel Scot when he described the persecution of Christians in Pakistan and described Islamic beliefs.  At the University of Pretoria, in South Africa, Frontline Fellowship Field Director, Timothy Keller, was threatened by a mob of Muslim students demanding that a missions display be taken down.  In the United Kingdom, author Salman Rushdie became the subject of a death sentence for writing his book "The Satanic Verses" and the arts and media worlds are terrified of offending Muslims.  And with good reason - Dutch film-maker Theo van Gogh was murdered because he released a film criticising Islam and the oppression of women in arranged marriages.  His murderer, Mohammed Bouyeri, is unrepentant.

Believers are held in Islam by fear, making the Quranic promise that there is no compulsion empty. Mohammed said 'If somebody (a Muslim) discards his religion, kill him.' (Bukhari: Volume 4, book 52, Number 260, Narrated Ikrima.)

Apostasy is punishable by death today in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Yemen, Iran, Sudan, Pakistan and Mauritania.  Of point to us in evangelism is that the penalty for a Muslim converting to Christianity in Britain is still theoretically death.  Even if a convert's Muslims neighbours stop short of killing him, Muslim converts in Britain suffer severe persecution.  The Barnabas Fund estimate that some 3,000 Christian converts from Islam are in danger in the UK.  They include Nissar Hussain and his family from Bradford; his car was burnt out, he has endured bricks thrown through his windows, threats to burn his house down and much else.

Christianity

 is more than a Religion it is the main cultural force, which makes us what we are.

The following article by Susan Elkin who has taught English for over 30 years appeared in the Daily Mail, on Tuesday, April 15th, 2003 during Holy Week of that year.

 

The cutting had been kept because of the message, which it so clearly outlined of our Christian Heritage and with the forthcoming Festival of Christmas only a few months away it is as well that we should all acknowledge ‘that Christianity is more than a religion’.

Understanding Easter

 For centuries, Christians have used this week [April 15, 2003] Holy Week to commemorate the last few days in the life of Christ.

 It starts on Palm Sunday when Christ is said to have entered Jerusalem for the last time, riding a borrowed donkey.  And it ends with the near-despair of Easter Eve on Saturday after the crucifixion, but before the bright hope of new life, which comes with the resurrection on Easter Sunday.

 General knowledge? It certainly should be.  But how many children know what Holy Week stands for, why it is so called and why it matters?

Alarmingly few.

 It is not an insult to other great world religions to remind ourselves that culturally Britain is a Christian country and has been for 14 centuries.

Our way-of-life, law and attitudes are deeply rooted in it.

 It doesn’t matter what any individual may or may not believe (and I, for the record, am not a Christian believer).

 However, much as we work at human and liberal understanding, especially during a war, this country is not predominately Moslem, Buddhist or Hindu. It is Christianity that underpins European thought, and children being educated as young British citizens have a right to understand that.

 Christianity has the ‘advantage’ of being a potentially pretty tale and an excuse for a sentimental wallow.

 But there is nothing remotely nice about the events of Holy Week. So although children are accustomed on a daily basis to TV screens full of graphic and horrifying violence, schools seem to shy away from the crucifixion story.

 What do they do instead? 

Like the rest of our shallow, secularised and anything but spiritual society, they look anywhere other than to the Bible for the naff and romantic version of Easter.

 

The result?

For most children, Easter is just a spring festival and a holiday, one reduced to a season of boot fairs and chocolate guzzling.  School halls are full of pre-Christian fertility symbols, although few recognise them as that.  Rabbits, chicks and eggs are everywhere. There is hardly a cross in sight.

 

One school recently got publicity for forbidding the consumption of hot cross buns in case the crosses upset Moslem pupils.

 

It is scandalous that children are passing through our schools without being taught in depth and in detail about the stories and the thinking, which gave rise to Christianity.  And that doesn’t mean just the pretty or easy bits.

 Of course, because we have children of many cultures in our schools-and it is vital to promote tolerance-it makes sense to celebrate major non –Christian festivals as well.

 

But it is Christianity, which should have primacy because of where we are.  Young Britons of all backgrounds should learn how Christianity came to our country.

They should know, too, about the later buildings of that astonishing heritage – the great cathedrals- and be taken to visit one.   What better time than Easter for this?  The national Curriculum for Religious Education is taught according to syllabuses agreed and approved locally rather than set nationally.

 The need to provide every child with his or her spiritual entitlement is at the heart of every syllabus.  How can you do that properly without providing information and ideas?

 The conflict between good and evil and the need to come to terms with the mysteries of life and death are central to spiritual thinking across all faiths.

 Children need to explore the differences between right and wrong too.  What better peg than the Holy Week story for discussing morality.

 Children in schools should study the four gospel versions of the main stories, learning that the details differ considerably and why, a basic ‘media studies’ lesson about reporting of events and how to read accounts critically.

 What a great opportunity to keep alive the King James Bible, too. With its powerful poetic simplicity, it is the most important work of literature published in English.

 For hundreds of years much of our high art and music has drawn its inspiration from Christian mythology.  How can a child appreciate Michelangelo’s Pieta or the profoundly spiritual ‘He was Despised’ from Handel’s Messiah if they don’t know the story of Holy Week?

 Wishy-washy, politically correct teachers and syllabus compilers have no right to deny young people informed access to some of the greatest of all works of art.

 Christianity is more than a religion.  In Britain it is the main cultural force, which has made us what we are.  So it is time schools recognised that it is too important to be reduced to a furry toy or a bit of chocolate confectionary.

 FOR THE many men in her life, it was love at first sight. ‘I was captivated by her sheer beauty,’ declared one of her eminent lovers, a government minister.

 

‘She was slimly built with a beautifully proportioned body and graceful curves just where they should be. She was every young man’s dream.

 

‘Mind you, she was what mother called a fast girl. I was advised to approach her gently. But once safely embraced in her arms, I found myself reaching heights of delight I had never before experienced.

 

IT WAS NOT A WOMEN that Captain Harold Balfour Under-Secretary of State in the pre-war Ministry of Air, was drooling over back in the thirties [The Gathering Storm years] after his first meeting with HER. It was the British fighter plane that would change the course of history -the

 

Spitfire

 

But for all his passion, even he could not have predicted what a battle-winner she would prove to be. Not that she would come to be the very icon of British guts and defiance. Nor that decades later -into the 21st century in fact-the sight of her flying over London on special anniversaries would bring tears to the eyes of grown men and women.

 

The promise of a Spitfire in the skies can still lure thousands to an Air Show, just for a glimpse of those elegant lines, the purr of that Rolls-Royce engine and all the history and glamour, death and glory, packed into her 31ft fuselage and 37ft wing-span.

 

TOMORROW

Sunday the 5th March 2006 is another historic anniversary.

 

It is 70 years to the day since the very first

 

Spitfire

 

Prototype climbed into the skies at

 

Eastleigh in Hampshire

 

-half its fuselage covered in a dirty yellowish-green wash, the rest rough and unpainted.

 

Captain ‘Mutt’ Summers, the Test Pilot, took her up to 3,000 ft and had her back on the ground in 8 minutes later. But in that short time in the air, the prototype won him over.

 

“the handling qualities of this machine are remarkably good “,

 

he wrote in the Test-Flight Log.

 

Destiny awaited. Two days later, on March 7-1936, the troops of a resurgent Germany under Chancellor Adolf Hitler marched over the border to reclaim the Rhineland it had been forced to give up after losing the World War I.

 

The first steps had been taken towards the conflict for which, in every sense, the SPITFIRE was made.

 

It is difficult to overstate her impact on events. The Spitfire’s revolutionary design with its extra edge of speed and manoeuvrability stopped the German Messerschmitts in 1940 that until then had had no match in the skies over Europe.

 

But what these brave men -and many among the generations who had followed -never realised was that the Spitfire so nearly didn’t make it to the drawing board. In a desperate race against time, its brilliant creator Reg. Mitchell was fighting cancer as he put the finishing touches to his design for the aircraft.

 

He lived to see his creation make it into the skies -but died in 1937, two years before the outbreak of the war and never having seen the leanest, meanest fighting machine of its age in combat.

 

He was just 42 years old.

 

Reg Mitchell, or ‘R J’ as he was known is a name generally lost on all but air aficionados these days. So who was he?

 

A new book by his son, Gordon Mitchell, gives a glimpse into the life of this little-known engineering genius.

 

He was a son of a headmaster in Stoke and from his earliest days delighted in making things. He even built his own lathe. He left school at 16, became an apprentice in a railway engineering works and soon graduated to the drawing office.

 

Here his outstanding inventiveness quickly became apparent. Wanting to spread his wings, as it were, he applied for a job at the Supermarine Aviation in Southampton, a firm setting out in the infant business of seaplanes and flying boats.

 

RJ had stumbled on his life’s work and the outlet for his considerable talent.

 

He shot up the hierarchy until, just 25; he was Chief Designer and Chief Engineer with the job of creating the fastest seaplanes in the world.

 

Time and again Mitchell’s planes were entered for the Schneider Trophy, an International Flying Contest over water. His success rate was remarkable as he learned how to streamline an aircraft to get every last knot of speed out of her.

 

In between the wars, with the help of the expert team he built at Supermarine, he designed no fewer than 24 different aircraft. A shy man with a slight stammer, he never pushed himself forward for the headlines his Schneider successes were increasingly grabbing.

 

He gave that glory to the pilots whom he admired for their courage, the more so when two died in accidents in his experimental planes.

 

But if reserved in public, he was a martinet in the office, typically standing staring at his drawing board for hours puffing on his pipe as he worked out complex problems. It was a foolish employee who interrupted him deep in thought.

 

At home, son Gordon remembered flashes of temper, followed by long moody silences. ‘He had no time for anyone he considered a fool and could be rude if the individual concerned did not quickly get the message.

 

Then again, he had great charm, his son recalled, and a sense of fun. When not preoccupied with work, his blue eyes shone and his smile was warm.

 

Mitchell was a very British genius, quiet, retiring, never personally pushy. Nor would he ever be rich, for all his exceptional talent and success.

 

At Supermarine (later part of Vickers), his pay as Chief Designer began at £1,200 a year rising by £100 every December until it reached £2,500.a handsome enough sum for those days and equivalent to £76,000 today.

 

Even after being appointed a Director, he would remain essentially a well-paid employee, in an era when results were not rewarded with share options and ‘fat cat’ bonuses. The patents for his inventions stayed with the company.

 

He brought a large detached house with peaceful gardens and a live in maid in the suburbs, played tennis and golf

And took family holidays at Bournemouth.

 

He was never one for the high life, despite the fast and wealthy international aviation set he sometimes dealt with. He preferred the company of his fellow workers, for whom he had great admiration. His best night out was with the lads at the drawing -room party.

 

His one indulgence was a Rolls Royce car, but since Sir Henry Royce was a fellow engineer and collaborator, that was not surprising.

But by 1933 Mitchell was harbouring a grim secret: He had been diagnosed with bowel cancer. He had a major operation and was fitted with a colostomy bag. Inventive man that he was, he even designed a better bag to conceal his disability.

 

A lesser man would have stopped work, but Mitchell was driven. By the mid-thirties, the world of peaceful international flying competitions began to change to one of more deadly and warlike rivalries. As a result, the Air Ministry in London sought tenders for a fast ‘killer’ fighter plane.

 

Mitchell’s first attempt was a flop. It had an open cockpit and a fixed undercarriage and could reach only 230 mph, 20mph short of the Ministry’s specification and a long way off his 400mph seaplanes.

 

Despite the terrible pain and distress of his illness, he stayed at his design desk as he smoothed out the Spitfire’s problems ahead of her first Test Flight.

 

In the next design, he retained just the name-

 

Spitfire

 

-suggested by the company’s chairman Sir Robert Mclean. It was what he called his feisty daughter, Ann.

 

Everything else changed. The shape of the wings went straight to elliptical. Against all conventional thinking, he also made the wings thin rather than thick. A sliding cockpit canopy gave the pilot al-round vision while reducing drag.

 

A Rolls Royce Merlin engine completed the transformation, and it was the prototype -K5054 - that flew that day 70 years ago.

 

Twelve weeks later, the RAF had its first go in the new fighter; Flight Lieutenant Humphrey Edwardes-Jones took her up at Martlesham Heath, the test aerodrome in Suffolk. He almost crashed her.

 

A revolutionary aspect of the

 

Spitfire

 

-were wheels that retracted into the wings when in flight to make her more aerodynamic. As he came in to land he almost forgot to drop the undercarriage, and only just recovered in time.

 

His verdict, telephoned to the Air Ministry was that the Spitfire was

 

‘delightful to handle’

 

-and would be easy for the pilots to learn to fly-as long as they remembered to put the wheels down! Eight days later, the Ministry ordered 310 at a cost of £1.25 million (£38m at today’s prices.)

 

It was Mitchell’s triumph - and with that over, he turned his attention for designing a better, faster bomber for the RAF.

But he ran out of time. In February 1937, in exasperation, he told a visitor:

 

‘I who have so much to do, have only until June.’

 

The next month he finally stopped work.

 

Characteristically, he worried that he was letting people down by not being able to finish the job he had started. Letters from colleagues high and low assured him

 

he had done far more than most.

 

He made one last effort to live, flying by private plane to a cutting edge cancer clinic in Vienna. The treatment did not work.

 

After five weeks the doctors sent him home to die. He sat in his garden, often with the local vicar, and in June, the month he predicted, he died.

 

‘I just felt numb,’ his son, then aged 16, recalled, ‘but I could comprehend that at least he was no longer in pain’

 

Meanwhile, the Spitfire, one of the greatest single-seater fighters of all time was on its way into mass production. The first of more than 20,000 rolled of the production lines in 1938.

 

It would be another two years before it’s

-fought and won that crucial confrontation with the Luftwaffe.

 

The Spitfires took on the enemy Messerschmitt fighters that protected the German bomber formations. The slower Hurricanes then moved in to down the defenceless bombers.

 

It was a joint victory, but in truth, it was the

 

SPITFIRE

 

-that made the crucial difference and for which

-remains a largely forgotten hero.

 

His son, now 85, feels certain his father’s death robbed Britain of yet more world-beating inventions. That bomber, the project he never finished was one example. He was designing it to fly at top speed of 360mph, 25 per cent faster than the Lancaster and the Wellington.

 

How much quicker might Bomber Command have got on top of the Luftwaffe, if its crews had been flying Reg Mitchell’s creation?

 

How much sooner might the war have been won?

 

The greatest tragedy of Reg Mitchell’s death at such a sadly early age was that thousands of other lives that given the chance, he might also have saved.

[The following letters to the Editor of the Daily Telegraph -Dec., 13-2006 -explain the full anger of members of the population to the further destruction of the vital organs which serve the body of the communities.]

 

SIR- A man kicked to death outside Henley police station as it reported that 900 stations have been closed.  Thousands more rural post offices are to be shut. Our Armed Forces are imperfectly equipped for the wars to which the Government has committed them. Gangs of feral youths roam the streets. Britain is in social collapse due to the decline in traditional family values.

 

WHY?

It's because a financially incompetent welfare state and a political determination not to be judgmental about wayward sections of society have destroyed the fabric of this once great nation. This will go on doing so unless a political leadership emerges with the courage to tackle the problem.

 

If this is to be the Conservatives, they need to emerge from the New closet in which they have been skulking for the past year, ..."'Don't Talk, Fix it"

SIR- The Closure of police stations is yet another issue that is dealt with through spin rather than honesty.

The reality of the 24-hour police stations is that they provide reassurance to residents and the fact that patrolling officers come in and out of the premises at various times means that there is a guaranteed visible police presence in the local area. When these premises are closed officers may be based a significant distance away and local police will have to rely on a chance patrol to see a police officer.

The next issue for spin rather than substance will be police community support officers, just about the only visible "police" presence in my area. it won't be long before the Government presents these well-meaning, but under trained (when compared with police constables) officers as an integral part of overall police numbers on the streets.

SIR- There used to be two sub-post offices within a reasonable walking and cycling distance of my home. They were of course killed off by the Government. Now I must drive a considerable distance to a shopping centre wherein now lies our nearest post office.

This office is overwhelmed with customers -the queues are long and slow. Fortunately, as we stand patiently in line , we are entertained by an overhead television screen showing advertisements for mail services and displaying the proud message

"The Post Office - serving you at the heart of your community"

Real services have been replaced by media spin. Joined up Government in action

SIR- Our police station in Oxted became part-time a few years ago; about the same time as the crime rate went up.

Recently we had our first armed bank raid in Oxted High Street at midday. We have more chance of seeing a traffic warden than a policeman.

The Prime Minister announced yesterday that she is to take personal charge of solving Britain's acute housing crisis.

In next week's Budget, planning rules will be relaxed, social housing debt cancelled, stamp duty cut and billions of pounds will be pumped into house-building projects.

New homes will spring up across the land, on brownfield sites, in back gardens, on the rooftops of existing buildings even.

Yet Theresa May says it can all be achieved while protecting the Green Belt. Build up, not out, is the new mantra. Pile 'em high and sell 'em cheap.

Marvel as Mother Theresa morphs into Bob the Builder. Can we fix it? Yes we can!

But hang on a minute. Are we really going to need all these little boxes post Brexit?

Not if the Remain scaremongers are to be believed. They're like those deluded Japanese soldiers after Hiroshima, hiding out in the jungle, still fighting the last war.

Once we leave the EU, they warn, jobs will dry up and millions of immigrants will flee the country. Indeed, scared migrants are doing so already, forced out by mobs of knuckle-scraping neo-Nazis roaming the streets stirring up a hate crime epidemic.

The NHS is on the brink of collapse, as nurses and doctors who came here from overseas seek sanctuary in safe havens abroad.

Crops are left to rot in the fields, as agricultural workers return home to Eastern Europe. Soon you won't be able to hire a Polish plumber for love nor money. Pubs and restaurants will close their doors because they can't recruit foreign bar staff and waitresses. There won't be a car wash left anywhere in Britain.

All those Polski skleps which have taken over from Asian corner shops will go bankrupt overnight, as their customers retreat in droves to Warsaw and Gdansk. Our inner cities will become ghost towns and our public services will implode, shorn of hard-working immigrants run out of Britain, virtually at gunpoint.

That, at least, is the apocalyptic vision post Brexit painted by the fanatics still trying to perpetuate Project Fear. If they're right, then we won't need to build millions of new homes, since Brexodus — as it's being dubbed — will free up housing stock everywhere.

Rents and house prices will come crashing down as demand plummets and young people will be able to scale the housing ladder like Barbary apes. Dream on.

Like all the other horror stories invented by the Remoaners, Brexodus is a pack of lies. Far from foreign nationals fleeing Britain, they are continuing to flock here in record numbers. We don't have a housing crisis, we have a population crisis — driven almost exclusively by immigration. It's one of the main reasons people voted Leave.

MigrationWatch UK — which has been about the only body to tell the unvarnished truth about immigration over the past couple of decades — reports that eight out of ten new households established between 2000 and 2015 are made up of migrant families.

As these new arrivals age, it will put even more pressure on housing. MigrationWatch says we should consider, for instance, the number of young men — especially from Eastern Europe — currently living as many as a dozen or more to a house. In time, they will all want to start families and set up homes of their own.

MigrationWatch's Lord Green said: 'We have a major crisis over housing affecting huge numbers of people, especially the young. Yet the focus of debate is still on supply; nobody dares talk about demand and its principal driver, immigration.'

What's more, in the five years up to 2015, the number of households headed by someone born in Britain actually fell. So if there is a Brexodus, it is comprised of British nationals moving abroad, many saying they don't want to live in a country they no longer recognise.

The reality is the polar opposite of the Remoaners' propaganda about frightened migrants fleeing racist Britain and plunging us into an economic crisis.

In truth, the economy has performed pretty spectacularly since the referendum result — certainly better than the rest of Europe — creating an explosion in jobs which are being filled by workers from home and abroad.

For instance, the preposterous Vince Cable claimed that 10,000 foreign staff 'have walked away from the National Health Service because they don't think they're needed or wanted any more'. Yet just a few days ago, a forensic Mail investigation blew Vinnie's little fantasy out of the water.

At the end of June there were 3,181 more EU nationals working in the health service than in 2016. Yesterday, official Government figures from the Office for National Statistics showed there were 2.38 million EU nationals working in Britain — an increase of 112,000 on a year ago.

The number of Romanians and Bulgarians who have found jobs here now stands at almost 350,000, up by a third in the past 12 months. They have no incentive to scuttle off back to Bucharest and Sofia any time soon.

Last time anyone looked, the 10,000 Poles, Lithuanians and other assorted Eastern Europeans who have made their home in Boston, Lincolnshire — Britain's Brexit capital — showed no signs of upping sticks and sloping off home, pursued by the provisional wing of Ukip. Nor will they have to.

Despite the pig-headed intransigence and obstructionism of the EU's Brexit negotiators, determined to punish the British people for voting Leave, Mrs May has already guaranteed the rights of EU citizens living here. And it's not just the EU, either. Immigrants from all over the world are still making Britain their top destination, often risking life and limb to get here.

Why would they want to join a sinking ship? Are they all crazy? Are they really determined to make their new lives in a racist, basket-case, post-Brexit wilderness?

Or could it be, perhaps, that they are attracted here to join friends and family who report that Britain is a tolerant, civilised, multi-cultural country with a generous welfare system and a bright, independent future offering endless opportunity for economic advancement?

Millions of migrants are choosing Britain over the sclerotic countries of the bureaucratic, moribund EU. And will continue to do so once we leave and become again a confident, outward-looking nation, free to embrace the globe and all it has to offer.

That will mean embracing not just free trade but the brightest and best immigrants, too, who will continue to be welcomed here.

That, in turn, will mean they're all going to need somewhere to live. Which is why the Prime Minister is right to make housing a priority.

Our innate resolve and pragmatic nature suggests we will tackle this housing crisis with the determination and elan we have applied to every other crisis in our history.

Ignore the hysterical lies and predictions of doom, the death rattle of the Remoaners determined to sabotage Brexit by any means fair or foul.

Britain, home of Bob the Builder, will rise to the challenge.

Can we Brexit? Yes we can!

THE 'COVENANT OF SECURITY'

The Islamic concept of a 'Covenant of Security' means two things. Firstly, unbelievers who pay the Jizyah are entitled to the provision of security from the Khilafah, and secondly, a non-Islamic nation which provides shelter to Muslims is not regarded as Dar-al-Harb. It is the second meaning which is relevant to Britain today.

In practice, as long as Britain sheltered Islamic terrorists planning strikes against their own governments, and did not make war against islamic lands, Britain was safe from attack.  The turning of London into Londonistan, a haven for foreign jihadists, made Britain, in a perverse kind of way, a safer place.

Chief among advocates of the 'Covenant of Security' was Skeikh Omar Bakri, leader of al-Muhajiroun. The head of its Luton branch, Sayful Islam, said in April 2004 that he supported Osama Bin Laden "100 per cent" in the quest to achieve

"the worldwide domination of Islam"

but he would not engage in terror attacks in Britain

"as long as they allow us Muslims to live here in peace."

All that changed as events unfolded in 2004 as a result of 9/11.

The British Government arrested certain foreign nationals on suspicion of inciting terrorism, and, unable for human rights reasons to deport them, kept them interned without trial.

The second factor was Britain's active support in the American invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

In January 2005 Bakri determined that the covenant of security had ended and "the whole of Britain had become Dar-al-Harb."

British Muslims were obliged "to join the global Islamic camp against the global crusader camp" the latter of which included Britain. Six months later, the bombing campaign in London began.

Other British jihadists took a different line. Hassan Butt left al Muhajiroun because he disagreed that British-born Muslims were bound by the same covenant of security felt by foreigners, such as Bakri himself.  In an interview, Butt said British-born Muslim youth have no allegiance to this country: "Islamically, I agree that someone who runs from the Middle East-where people like me are persecuted-and says, 'Britain, I want you to protect me' has entered a covenant of security. They  say, 'look protect my life and as a result I won't do any harm to you.' That  I agree with 100 per cent, but most of our people, especially the youth are British citizens... They did not ask to be born here; neither did they ask to be protected by Britain....They  have no covenant. As far as I'm concerned, the Islamic hukum (order) that I follow, says that a person has no covenant whatsoever with the country in which they are born." (Prospect Magazine August 2005)
