LET'S set Britain FREE!
by
Max Hastings
[Daily Mail-June 19-2007]
Britons are crushed by a bullying
system run by faceless bureaucrats -unelected QUANGOS and an ever more
voracious centralising STATE. Today the Mail launches a campaign to
return
POWER to the PEOPLE.
-to make
THEIR decisions about THEIR lives.
THIS was his empowerment moment, though
thank goodness he didn't use such an awful phrase.
Yesterday, David Cameron told the
assembled Tory faithful in Tooting that his party's
BIG IDEA
-will be a social responsibility.
'There is such a thing as society,'
he said, 'but society is not the same as the
state.
Social responsibility means that every
time we see a problem, we don't ask what the government can do.'
The Conservative Party will campaign on
a platform of bottom-up initiative , in place of top-down dictatorship
from
WHITEHALL.
Cameron perceives Gordon Brown as the
ultimate statist, committed to a belief that all problems are best
solved by
CENTRAL GOVERNMENT.
Blair is on the brink of departure and
the real campaign towards the next general Election is about to BEGIN.
The Tories believe that Labour's great vulnerability stems from Gordon's
conviction that he really, sincerely knows best how to spend our money
and run our lives.
They intend to fight a sharply personal
campaign against an incoming Labour leader who over ten years, has
gathered more power into his hands than any peacetime politician in
BRITISH HISTORY.
As Chancellor, it is he who has
stripped local authorities of all but a fig leaf of influence over
raising and spending money.
Creator
It is Brown who has dumped on councils,
schools, hospitals and institutions, targets and performance indicators
on a scale that would have impressed , well, Stalin - to quote the
opinion of former Cabinet Secretary Lord Turnbull.
Brown has been the creator of the mad
world in which Kew Gardens was set a target of' receiving 30,000
herbarium specimens a year', and the Atomic Energy Authority was told
that it must increase its favourable media coverage by 43.9 per cent.
The Chancellor has been driving the
campaign to strip local authorities of their last remaining powers over
housing strategy. He presides over a Britain in which elected
representatives have less power, and unelected commissars of the
quango-cracy more than in any other nation in Europe. A 'democratic
audit by Essex University concluded that 'in the 20th century, the UK
became one of the most centralised political systems in the
WESTERN WORLD.
It is hardly surprising that formal
citizen participation by voters and as candidates for election has
continued to decline'. People have stopped bothering about local
government because they don't think anything they say or do makes any
difference.
They feel imprisoned by the system
which has given power to faceless men and women in faraway government
offices, who - know nothing of Meadow Crescent or
Oak Avenue.
Everybody has their own story of what
the destruction of local institutions means on their patch.
Parish councils find it ever harder to
recruit members, because people see no point in attending bodies
stripped of influence.
Police authorities lack effective
control over local forces. Hospital and school management is at the
mercy of Treasury targets. Only a third of the population bother to vote
in local elections, and only a tiny fraction know the name of their own
councillor.
A friend of ours, who has given 20
years service to her local magistrates' bench, has just quit. She no
longer thinks the job worth doing, Her bench has been transferred from a
nearby town where it has sat for centuries to a city 20 miles away,
where it has merged with others.
'We can no longer administer local
justice,' she says,' because we no longer know the places, the people,
or even the other JPs we sit with. The new arrangement may look more
efficient to
WHITEHALL
-but it means the abolition of local
justice for people down here.'
CIVIC PRIDE HAS GONE
Compare the pretty little town squares
of France and Italy, where local mayors and communes are important
people who exercise dominant influence over the communities, compared
with their British counterparts.
More than 30 years' erosion of local
government - for, of course, the Tories began the process - have
accelerated dramatically in the past decade. Brown hates diversity, the
notion that people and towns are entitled to be different from each
other. Year after year, by directives and council tax capping,
legislation and arbitrary edicts, he has drained away
PERSONAL and COMMUNITY CHOICE
Bossed
NOW-David Cameron believes that Brown's
control-freakery, his mania for taking every strand of government into
his own hands, will prove his undoing. The British people, thinks the
Tory leader, have had enough of the
NANNY STATE
-of being bossed and bullied from
WHITEHALL
-about the tiniest details of their
lives.
He perceives a well of frustration out
there, among ordinary people who want to regain power to make their own
decisions about what happens in
THEIR STREETS.
Cameron thinks he can win the next
General Election by offering an
ALTERNATIVE
He promises to lead a government which
will restore to people's lives
THE POWER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
This is a noble objective - if it
can be made to happen. The problem is akin to that of long-term jail
inmates. As a nation, as citizens, we have been without proper local
government for so long that we have become institutionalised.
The difficulty is very great of
persuading able people -the sort who a century ago made brilliant mayors
and conscientious councillors. Instead of today's hacks and expence
claimers - once again to stand for office.
Good citizens have been neglected,
indeed spurned, for so long that they have got out of the habit.
They have been supplanted by QUANGOS
dominated by New Labour clients, people
willing to fill in idiotic government forms, accept the new risks of
litigation and do whatever the Treasury bids them.
The old community stalwarts went home
in disgust a generation ago. It will be hard to replace them.
Elected local government will work only
if high -grade local people will again accept responsibility - and if
CENTRAL GOVERNMENT
-is really willing to
LET THEM TAKE IT.
[We can see in the above catastrophic
damage in our communities that the destruction has been proceeding
without any real opposition by the
Conservative Party
Since the days after Margaret Thatcher
the so-called
HER MAJESTY'S OPPOSITION
-has been watching the wanton
destruction of the fabric of our local communities and as they are
ardent followers of the centralised European Union they failed to notice
over the past decades the devastation to our once proud and energetic
local self government.
One has to ask oneself -would this
state of affairs have happened if those decades ago there had been
PR PRO-PORTIONAL REPRESENTATION
as there would have been a great
possibility that the formation of a future government might not have
been possible without the support of the smaller parties.
There is every possibility that the
1992 Maastricht Treaty
-would never have been approved and
many other issues which have today wreaked our local democracy would
never have been passed. The possibilities of what might have been
avoided if the House of Commons had to contend with other political
parties who had passionate issues at stake and therefore be a break on
the precipitous actions of the tripartite cabal which has only in the
main looked after itself and
NOT THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE COUNTRY.
How fortunate for Mr Cameron that at
this precise time he is now fully aware of the colossal damage to our
once democratic local government which his own party has had a hand and
how is it that this issue has now only surfaced on the eve of a
GENERAL ELECTION
His party is by tradition is called
HER MAJESTY'S OPPOSITION
so we ask where has it been these last
ten years that it has suddenly realised that being nice to Mr Blair and
agreeing with many of his policies while in the country at large a major
destruction of local government was taking place.
The centralisation of our society was a
prelude to our absorption into a
UNITED STATES OF EUROPE
-and as we are still unsure of the
precise position the party is taking on the question of whether in or
out of the EU and the recent abrupt changes of policy because they had
not consulted fully with their members at grassroots.
To many it will seem that it is current
fad to fit the desperate situation the party finds itself after ten
years of indecisive decisions on many major issues facing our country
such as
EUROPE
IMMIGRATION
IRAQ
-and countless other issues at local
level.
IT is no wonder that many voters will
be sceptical of this sudden conversion -but then there is possible a
General Election in the offing.
The issues in the Daily Mail campaign
are of such staggering immensity and importance and it is right that
they are aired and politicians of all parties look more closely at the
colossal damage that is being done to local democracy and local
accountability.
*
To continue:
Masters
Many politicians declare an undying
commitment to localism when in opposition. Once safely in office,
however, they find it irresistible to keep all that delicious power in
their own hands in
WHITEHALL
Reading David Cameron's words
yesterday, I caught an echo of what another idealistic young politician
said a decade ago:
'We are not masters now. The People
are the masters.'
THAT WAS TONY BLAIR.
*
Here is another passage which might
come out of Cameron's speech in Tooting.
'We are moving from the old Britain of
subjects where people had to look upwards to a Westminster bureaucracy
for solutions to a Britain of citizens where, region to region, we are
in charge.'
THAT WAS GORDON BROWN IN 2001
I am not such a cynic as to dismiss
Cameron's words merely because Blair and Brown have sung the same siren
song - then done the opposite. The Tory leader's commitment to personal
choice is hugely welcome.
It will strike a chord with a vast
number of people who are fed up to the back teeth with being told from
London what is to happen in Exeter or Doncaster.
Cameron is surely right that if Gordon
Brown plays the dictator in 10 Downing Street, as he has done through
his ten years at the Treasury, he will richly deserve to lose the next
GENERAL ELECTION
If that happens, we must not allow
Cameron to forget what he promised in June 2007.
Communities up and down the country
must demand back from his government all the
RIGHTS and RESPONSIBILITIES
-that have been pillaged from them by
TONY BLAIR.

Warning Voices
From The Past
about remembering the good and
proved advice on
GOOD GOVERNMENT
-As the Daily Mail's
reporter and historian Max Hastings has commented today
June 19-2007
We most sincerely
put our trust in a proven man of principle Gordon
Brown who must seize this golden opportunity to re-track
the Labour Party from its centralising mania and we
shall all see within the
100 Days
whether he intends
to change and agree most positively to support the Daily
Mail Campaign
AND
'Let's Set Britain
Free'
Regrettably the
actions of the supposed
HER MAJESTY'S
OPPOSITION
-has at the eleventh
hour awoken but it is too little too late for we have to
look back over the past ten years to see how such
deceitful- dangerous and damaging legislation has been
allowed to be passed -even by the use of the Parliament
Act
and all we have
heard over the last year or so is a leader who wished to
emulate the most
Disreputable-Duplicitous and Dishonest
Prime Ministers
in
British History.
Our considered
opinion is that the so-called Conservative Party has NOT
done the constitutional service expected by an
OPPOSITION PARTY
-and should remain
in OPPOSITION until it proves its worth in the
grave matters facing our country
An Illegal War
A European
Union-determined to enslave our nation-state-over 1400
years in the making and a British Prime Minister
determined to put his ambition before country in a few
days time.
We have to remember
that it was the Conservative Party that passed the 1992
Maastricht Treaty -which was the open door to the
UNITED STATES OF
EUROPE.
You will naturally
say what happens if Gordon Brown does not support the
loosening of centralisation and offers no way out of
Europe or even a stop to any more give-aways to that
unaccountable -corrupt-police state?
The problem is of
our own making because the issue of
PR PROPORTIONAL
REPRESENTATION
at Westminster has
been ignored by the main parties and the multitude of
political parties and organisations in the country. It
has left the
tripartite Westminster Cabal free from real
competition and as a result they hold the ace card and
have no wish to share their power base and the lovely lolly and privilege with others ,who they fear would be
more passionate about the great issues facing our
country in the 21st century.
So we are left with
the choice -but in reality there is only one man we can
trust-a man whose credentials in the main we accept
-knowing of his faults which all politicians harbour but
we do not doubt his strength of purpose and hope most
urgently that Gordon Brown will make the changes which
the majority of the People are asking for and at the top
of the list is the protection of our
FREE NATION
STATE
We await the results
of the first 100 days which will decide the fate of our
Nation and People with hope and of great expectations.
Destiny has showed
its face- we hope it is what all loyal subjects are all
waiting for.

JUNE 19-2007
IIn Letters to the
Daily Mail column on Wednesday June 20 -2007 we sighted
an appropriate contribution from a correspondent D
.A from London SW 19 which must be no doubt the view of
millions who in this country had high hopes at his
crowning -but how disappointing it has been.
*
Time to grow up, Dave
SO DAVE says he's going
to listen to members of the public (hollow laugh) and
value their input policy wise (oh yeah).
I've tried repeatedly to get past his
bodyguard of office rottweillers, trained to reply with
excruciatingly polite letters while ensuring any points
I raise are rigorously ignored.
I've asked specific questions such as:
Do you find it acceptable or intolerable
that 75 per cent of our legislation [At least] is
decided in circumstances over which we have no control,
little influence and only the merest semblance of
democracy? I've
even given him tick boxes so he doesn't even have to
construct a sentence in reply.
I tell him his pathetic policy towards
Europe is unworkable. Brussels is not going to abandon
50 years of concentrated effort towards a federal state
-not when they are on the last lap - just because Dave
asks them to. He's going to be outflanked by the
BERLIN DECLARATION
being turned into a
TREATY
and passed during this Labour
government's tenure, leaving him feebly blathering.
He doesn't even listen to his own party
members or take note that three-quarters of the public
polled would either quit the political/economic
involvement, or leave the EU altogether.
He dismisses anyone who disagrees with
him as 'delusional' or calls us names such as
'fruitcake' [Etc...]
Dave - grow up
