Once again we are all made aware of our own thoughts which we are unable to express because of the scourge of Political Correctness by the timely article in

Saturday’s Daily Mail by Max Hastings

which exposes the dangers which have taken place because of the

unlimited immigration policy of the present Government.

‘ Millions of moderate Britons – deeply worried that limitless immigration is destroying their Nation’s Identity – are cowed into silence by the Left who argue that any discussion of this subject is racist. –What Nonsense!’

 ‘I think of myself as a one-nation Tory, a social liberal’, says Mr Max Hastings.  ‘ I applauded Margaret Thatcher’s resurrection of the enterprise culture, deplored her indifference to the poor, favour Europe but not today the Euro, mistrust the police, loath capital punishment, want grammar schools restored and support university top-up fees’.

  In Modern Britain, all these matters are contentious, but we can argue about them anywhere. There is one issue, however, about which all public exchanges are muted, stifled. The Left has driven debate on Immigration underground. It brandishes above the heads of every opponent of large-scale increases in the population of this Island that most terrible of charges – Racism. And that threat works.

 

Even the Conservative party, desperate to recover Power, holds back from assaulting the Government on its deplorable record, for fear of unleashing the wrath of the Liberal media. The worst legacy of Enoch Powell’s ravings in the Sixties is that they made it impossible ever since to hold a rational debate in Britain about Immigration.

 

Figures published this week show that the non-white population of London has topped two million, almost double the figure of a decade ago. Britain’s capital has become a Bable, as anyone who rides on a Tube or Bus perceives in a moment, among passengers drawn from dozens of Nationalities.

 

Enthusiasts such as London Mayor –Ken Livingston applaud the’ richness and diversity’ this creates. They speak of immigrants’ priceless contribution to the ‘London buzz’, rivalling the melting pot of New York. Livingston welcomes the inflow of immigrants, who account for almost a third of his city’s population.

 

‘ Our poll shows that nearly eight out of ten Londoners think that the city’s cultural diversity is one of its most attractive features’, he says. This may be true, but Mr Livingston fail to add that 80% of British poll respondents also wants more effective control of Immigration.

 

And the truth is that the real number of Immigrants in London is higher than the official figure, because so many illegal residents avoid censuses.

 

For instance, the latest survey records 45,000 people from the whole South American continent in London, yet the Columbian embassy believes Britain is hosting 150,000 of its citizens alone.

 

We know that more than 250,000 immigrants and asylum seekers are arriving here each year creating a net population increase of more than two million a decade.

 

The Home Secretary, ‘Billy’ Blunkett believes this does not matter. Last month, he said on TV that he perceives no particular upper limit at which the number of immigrants arriving in Britain would become un acceptable.

 

Some economists argue that immigration is not only essential to provide a 21st century work force for Britain when its population is ageing and the birth rate falling.

 

We shall return to the economic issue later, let us address first the Social one.

 

 

Politics is an ongoing debate about what kind of Britain we all wish to live in. It is a wholly legitimate part of this debate to consider which outsiders should not be admitted to the privilege of joining our society.

 

The Left argues that anyone opposed to large –scale immigration is, ipso facto, a racist. This is nonsense.

 

No country in the modern world can close its doors to all comers, and few sensible people wish to do so.

 

But it is entirely reasonable for any citizen to believe, and to exercise a right to declare publicly, that he or she wishes to live in a community dominated by people who share our historic culture and values.

 

It is plainly racist to object to the presence in Britain of any given individual merely because of their colour or creed.

 

It is not racist to argue that we must set limits upon how many people of alien cultures or creeds can enter Britain within a given time span without imposing intolerable strains on our society.

 

At a time when housing the British people is a crisis issue for this overcrowded Island, Sir Andrew Green’s Migration watch (the independent organisation set up to monitor immigration policy) estimates that an additional 1.1 million new homes will be

needed simply to provide roofs for immigrants

 

The Government’s arguments about Britain’s urgent need for immigrant labour seem spurious.

 

It is indeed possible that, 20 years from now, we shall want workers. We do not need them now. Young workers arriving in 2003 will already be ageing by the time even the most pessimistic labour studies perceive a real need for their services.

 

Given the desire of many British people to keep working past retirement age, even if we shall no longer be capable of heaving bricks on building sites, the need for immigrant labour a generation hence remains highly speculative.

 

So why does the Government continue to admit legal immigrants in increasing numbers and to make no serious effort to exclude illegal immigrants and asylum seekers.

 

First, on the issue of asylum seekers, ministers perceive themselves bowing to the inevitable. The physical difficulties of keeping them out are enormous because Britain has abandoned effective frontier controls.

 

The Government absolutely refuses to contemplate abrogating the half-century Human Rights Conventions as a preliminary to effective action. These are failures for which Ministers should be harshly judged if or when a major terrorist atrocity takes place in Britain.

 

Thanks to the reckless abdication of responsibility, the authorities no longer possess reliable knowledge of movements across our borders by terrorists, never mind immigrants.

Second, a deep-rooted instinct in favour of Immigration pervades the Labour benches of the House of Commons.

 

The liberal media almost daily highlight examples of asylum seekers who have allegedly been victimised by the Immigration authorities and threatened with expulsion to persecution in their home countries.

 

The traditional socialist view is that immigration is a good thing, which makes Britain a more diverse and vigorous society, and that better any number of illegal immigrants than for us to renounce our historic role as a sanctuary for the oppressed.

 

Unfortunately, the ranks of the allegedly oppressed around the world today include millions of economic migrants who simply want a better life.

 

The facility with which even the poorest people in the world can travel renders the old liberal open-door vision utterly unrealistic.

It is impossible for the rich democracies to accept all those who yearn to come and live in them. It was a reckless act by Tony Blair for which he deserves to face the political pillory to grant a right to work in Britain to 72 million citizens of the new European members of the EU.

 

I asked a Polish friend the other day about the mood in his country.

‘They are all just aching to leave,’ he answered laconically.

 

‘The moment they become EU members, the floodgates will open.’

 

It is not a reflection of paranoia to suggest a further reason for: Labour’s inertia about Mass Immigration: it promises a political windfall.

 

It plays a significant part in fulfilling Tony Blair’s long declared aspiration to change the face of Britain forever.

 

Very few newcomers to Britain are likely to vote Tory, to embrace the old middle –class values which those cafetiere new- agers Blair and Brown so despire.

 

For many years, immigrants will be instinctive Labour supporters, just as new arrivals in the US almost always become Democrats.

 

I do not suggest that Tony Blair welcomes immigrants to gain political advantage. I merely submit that his Government is not making any serious attempt to exclude them, partly because their coming is good news for his Party. A year or two ago, I was teasing an old friend, a former Cabinet Minister of famously liberal convictions. What would his attitude be today, I asked, if he had to address the issue of Immigration? His answer surprised me.

 

‘ I don’t feel comfortable about seeing large numbers of People coming to live in this country that not only do not share our values, but have not the slightest desire to do so.’ he said.

Here, in a nutshell, is the view of a great many of us. I was amazed to hear it articulated by a legendary liberal, even if he would have flinched from saying as much in public.

 Here, I think is the heaviest charge against the Government and its acolytes.

 

Far from encouraging immigrants to espouse our Traditional Values, Labour has fostered the pernicious cause of multi- culturism.

 

 

It has encouraged the view that anybody who comes to Britain can bring with them and establish in Hounslow or Reading or Coventry or Newcastle their own bit of India or Pakistan, Africa or Caribbean. This is the bit that sticks in the throats of millions of British People. Nobody expects the new arrivals, straight off the boat, will tuck into bed with Jane Austen or be able to recite within weeks a list of Marlborough’s battlefield triumphs over the French.

 

Yet it seems a wholly proper indeed essential, message to give to immigrants who come to Britain that they are welcome here if they come to share our lives, but not if they want to make a corner of England forever Bombay or Dhaka

 

It is monstrous that some English children have to learn Urdu in schools.

 

It is repugnant that the Labour Party

Appears willing in the name of multi-culturalism, to extend a tolerance to forced arranged marriages and the ritual slaughter of animals, which it denies to foxhunting.

 

Multi-Culturism does a huge disservice to immigrants themselves. Norman Tebbit’s suggested ‘cricket test’ was much derided and indeed abused when he proposed it.

 

His choose of words was ugly. But he made a Fundamental point that cannot be dismissed: the way to make immigration acceptable to the huge majority of British people, whose country this is, is to encourage immigrants to assimilate. National and social identities are precious possessions, which need reinforcement, not suppression.

 

If immigrants don’t want to celebrate Guy Fawkes’ Day or read the Canterbury Tales in school, then they might care to think of living somewhere else.

 

Of course, schools, institutions and public services must recognise the cultural and language problems of new immigrants. They should, however, be pursuing policies directed towards social integration, not

 

Separation.

 

On current trends, within a few years, children from ethnic minorities will outnumber whites in London’s schools.

 

‘White flight’ will accelerate this development, as the middle classes leave boroughs such as Southwark, Ealing, and Lambeth in search of lives for themselves and their children among what they perceive as ‘their own kind’ in other parts of the countryside.

 

Tony Blair’s Government is lying to the British People by suggesting that 250’000 immigrants a year is an acceptable or remotely desirable number if the stability and coherence of our society are to be maintained.

 

The only consequence of an influx on such a scale must be to increase popular resentment and hostility towards those who come.

 

Whatever Ken Livingston’s pollsters may tell him, millions of people remain determinedly English, children of the culture of Dickens and Trollope, Wellington at Waterloo and chocolate digestive biscuits.

Our London is – or was the City of Pepys and Pygmalion. The latest London Population survey is bad news not because many of the city’s new immigrants are bad people or unworthy citizens, but because their numbers have changed the character of the Capital without its Historic inhabitants being consulted about whether they wanted to live in an ‘exciting cultural melting pot’.

 

Immigration and its consequences should be at the forefront of political argument because they are matters of deep concern to millions of voters.

 

AS it is, however, when the LEFT is ready to attack even the excellent work of Sir Andrew Green’s Migrationwatch as a reflection of racism, many people feel obliged to vent their dismay and anger only behind closed doors.

 

The sooner the newly revived Conservative Party works out a policy on Immigration (and no more plans to invite mockery such as processing asylum seekers on off-shore islands, please Mr Howard) then the better for the health of the body politic.

 

We are not, thank goodness with ‘rivers of blood’ but we do face profound changes in our society, which this Government has no mandate to endorse. The British People care deeply about this, and are entitled to say so without embarrassment.’

[WHAT Tony Blair is allowing to happen is the eventual destruction of a our Peoples Culture and way of life by permitting the influx of unlimited immigration of those of alien culture with the sole purpose of changing the character and culture of the indigenous People of our Island.

 

During the Second World War the Nazi’s almost destroyed an entire race whose origins where 3000 years in the past. The present means used by Mr Blair have a similar purpose- the vanquishing of the way of life and culture of Peoples who have existed in these Islands for over 1400 years by the flooding in of millions of immigrants of an Alien Culture many of whom have no desire to assimilate and who will in time wish to create many Foreign States within a State.

 

The Nazi’s were able to almost achieve their objective because other Nations failed to speak out and act to prevent such a Holocaust, and only the victory of the Allies in the Second World War, saved many who would have perished.

 

We hope our kin and friends throughout the world will voice their protest at the attempt to annihilate a People by our Government’s obsession with Political Correctness and Multi-Culturalism.

 As already stated above there will always be a home for other Peoples of all nationalities and creeds but their numbers must be controlled for the benefit of ALL the People in our Island.

This will ensure the future cohesion of our Nation in the difficult and dangerous years ahead.

 DO YOU remember the 1980 Olympic Games? Probably not. But they were a major political event because the U.S. called for a boycott of the Great Moscow event - which 59 other countries followed, but not us, I am glad to say.

 The protest arose because the Soviet Union had - Oh, the horror of it! - sent troops into Afghanistan. Such wickedness could not be forgiven.

 

The Russians offered the excuse that their intervention had been asked for by the Afghan president (that rings a bell somewhere?). But of course, such feeble justification was not going to be accepted by the U.S. and its best friends. Vietnam, did I hear you say? Oh well, that was different.

 In the event, the Soviet Afghanistan intervention was such a failure and so unpopular among Russians that it made a major contribution to the collapse of Communism.

In the pot-and-kettle context, I was looking recently at some of the exchanges during the Big Three meetings in 1945 to plan a brave new world. The U.S. and Britain were insisting that there should be proper elections in Eastern Europe. An interesting view said Molotov, and the Soviet Foreign Minister asked what were we planning to do about Franco’s Spain.

 But Spain was a major British trading partner, was Churchill’s rather weak retort. Whether Molotov produced one of his icy smiles at that point is not recorded.

 British and American protests about Soviet behaviour in Eastern Europe were also met by Molotov’s comments about human rights being violated in Greece - where Britain was aiding the Greek Right and against the Greek Left.

 Our side insisted that such a claim was a complete distortion of the truth. Were could he have got such information from? The British Press, responded Molotov.

 But we must not stray too far from Afghanistan, which is where disaster now lies. A British military contingent about the size of the police force of Wales is expected to control an area of similar size. To do so when hostility comes only from local warlords would be difficult enough.

 With the expectation that the region will draw in Muslim fanatics from other countries, it is hopeless. The country is made for guerrilla warfare with its mountains, caves, ravines and primitive roads.

 As the casualties start to mount -as they will

the public, already disillusioned about IRAQ, will want us to disengage. As we must. For we may face the slow death of the BRITISH ARMY

-one of the few institutions these days, which commands national and international admiration.

 

Iraq has been a brutal wound. Afghanistan could be mortal. Recruitment figures are liable to collapse.

 

But do not look to the Official Opposition for help. Already discredited by support for the Iraq war, the Tory Front Bench offers supine support for the

GOVERNMENT.

 Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague, normally a sensible man, prates about our ‘building’ a country alongside the Americans.

 

Shadow Defence Secretary Liam Fox talks of the ‘construction of a free and democratic Afghanistan’. [Well in England in particular many people would be appreciative if that was true in their country] But the first instinct of the Afghans must be that they should not be ruled or controlled by foreigners. [Well as the Press and Media have aired recently we have the same problem in England].

 Fox adds sonorously that:

‘We cannot fail to act and we cannot act and fail’ (I am working on that.)

 One wonders if the politicians have the slightest understanding of that country, its people or its tribal rivalries. Even the writ of the elected president does not run far outside Kabul and not much there.

 A riot in the city a week ago, after an accident involving an American vehicle, left eight dead and 100 injured. It could be more than that, agitators proclaim to a population all too ready to believe the worst.

 The Tories believe it is their duty at all times to stand by our armed forces whatever the conflict. This is ludicrously short-sighted.

 

If they want to support the Army, they should resist it being given impossible tasks.

Face ‘human shields’

British soldiers taking part in the biggest coalition offensive in Afghanistan told yesterday how the Taliban fighters had used women and children as ‘human shields.

 [NOW! Mr Blair you know what our troops will have to contend with and no doubt a number of lawyers in the UK will be hoping our lads will be on the road to the Old Bailey.]

 

Paratroopers revealed how they had to give pursuit of insurgents after coming under fire. Corporal Quinton Poll, a 29-year-old section commander with A Company of 3 Para, said:

 

‘I followed the gunman into a house and he started pushing women and children towards me.’

 ‘We know who we’re dealing with. But when you find out they are using human shields, you are just surprised.’

The troops came under fire as they arrived by helicopter in the remote mountain town of Nowzad as part of the U.S led Operation Mountain thrust, the biggest drive against militants since the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

The 11,000-strong coalition force of American, British, Canadian and Afghan troops have killed nearly 100 Taliban in recent days. But yesterday Taliban units retaliated, killing more than 30 civilians and abducting a dozen more. The firefight, which took place earlier this month, was part of the first major battle British troops faced since moving to southern Afghanistan this year.

 Details of the fight are only now becoming public after troops involved met reporters at a British base in Helmand province.

Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Tootal, the British battle group commander, sad his troops were ambushed by more than 50 Taliban operating in small groups. More than 20 Taliban were killed, while British forces sustained only minor injuries [?]

 He said the outcome of battles such as the clash at Nowzad could determine the success of a new Nato force now taking over security for southern Afghanistan.

‘I’d like to think it sent a message to the Taliban that they might want to think twice about attacking us again,’ he said.

 

But the commander insisted that winning hearts and minds was paramount.

He said:

 ‘If every day we could go out and improve the lot of the Afghan people, that would have a far greater effect than killing Taliban’

[Well he would have to say that for morale but the fact is they were taken in an ambush, which the terrain easily facilitates, and it will happen on a regular basis because the Taliban are the defenders of their own territory and the Afghan people are no different to any other people in wanting the invader to leave THEIR COUNTRY.

The only result that will be accomplished will be a regular flight of body bags to the UK and the injured - many for life - and the distress of their families and friends.]

Canadian and Dutch troops will be taking over neighbouring provinces, which are under U.S. command until NATO takes over next month. The Nowzad battle gives a sense of the unpredictable threat the NATO troops will face in what the alliance says is a tough mission

 The past few weeks have seen British forces move into areas in the high mountains of Helmand province that have seen no outside military presence for decades.

It is a wild country where the Taliban, who governed until the U.S.-led strikes in 2001, have been making a violent comeback against a new governor and the Western-backed government in Kabul.

ALL totalitarian regimes understand the power that stems from controlling history.

In Stalinist Russia, textbooks were revised so often that: students frequently had to do without them. Hitler wrongly blamed jews-among other minorities- for Germany's defeat in World War One.

AS George Orwell wrote in his novel Nineteen Eighty-Four:

'Who controls the present controls the past.'

Today's woke zealots have learnt the same lesson. They exploit history as an instrument of

PROPAGANDA

-and as a means of bullying the rest of us.

The trend is everywhere, from tearing down statues and removing historical artefacts that do not conform with the new orthodoxy to the 'cancellation of long-dead figures who fail modern purity tests.

'Only last week, it emerged that a charity named after Sir Winston Churchill has taken the ludicrous step of distancing itself from the great wartime Prime Minister over his purported views on race. The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust removed pictures of its namesake from its website and rebranded itself the

'Churchill Fellowship'

In a blog post, the charity opined: 'Many of [ Churchill's] views on race are widely seen as unacceptable today, a view that we share.

Furious volunteers accused the Trust of 'rewriting history' and surrendering to 'cancel culture'.

Churchill, a racist? He was certainly a complex man who held a number of competing views throughout his life - and over a long and distinguished career in public service, used language that many might now see as offensive.

BUT to tar him as a 'racist' misses one obvious point: this was the very man who played a key role in defeating the

NAZI REGIME,

The Islamic Jihad of the 7th to 10th centuries over-ran half of the then Christian World by the sword. Today, many western Muslims are peaceful and law-abiding, and those who are faithful to the Quran and to the Hadith may well stand beside Christians in campaigns against Materialism and immorality.

Equally, they can take the view that the decadent 'Christian' west is regarded as Dar-al-Harb (house of war). pagan and irredeemable. Only jihad, in the latter view, will bring 'peace' by the establishment of a new Khilafah (a Muslim state) worldwide and by the abolition of national boundaries to result in Izhaar ud-Deen (world domination by Islam).

Islamic states are at the forefront of persecution of Christians, a fact well documented by Operation Mobilisation, Barnabas Fund, Christian Solidarity and Frontline Fellowship amongst other Christian groups.  This topic alone would warrant a book about it and there is truly no space here to begin to do the subject the justice it deserves.

Even in non-Muslim countries, Islam shows its aggressive side, and this is putting the bombings in places like New York, Bali, Madrid, London and Israel on one side.  In Nigeria, Muslims are advancing Sha'ria and persecuting Christians, driving them out of Muslim areas by force of arms. In Australia, Muslims used the State of Victoria's Anti-Vilification Law to persecute Paster Daniel Scot when he described the persecution of Christians in Pakistan and described Islamic beliefs.  At the University of Pretoria, in South Africa, Frontline Fellowship Field Director, Timothy Keller, was threatened by a mob of Muslim students demanding that a missions display be taken down.  In the United Kingdom, author Salman Rushdie became the subject of a death sentence for writing his book "The Satanic Verses" and the arts and media worlds are terrified of offending Muslims.  And with good reason - Dutch film-maker Theo van Gogh was murdered because he released a film criticising Islam and the oppression of women in arranged marriages.  His murderer, Mohammed Bouyeri, is unrepentant.

Believers are held in Islam by fear, making the Quranic promise that there is no compulsion empty. Mohammed said 'If somebody (a Muslim) discards his religion, kill him.' (Bukhari: Volume 4, book 52, Number 260, Narrated Ikrima.)

Apostasy is punishable by death today in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Yemen, Iran, Sudan, Pakistan and Mauritania.  Of point to us in evangelism is that the penalty for a Muslim converting to Christianity in Britain is still theoretically death.  Even if a convert's Muslims neighbours stop short of killing him, Muslim converts in Britain suffer severe persecution.  The Barnabas Fund estimate that some 3,000 Christian converts from Islam are in danger in the UK.  They include Nissar Hussain and his family from Bradford; his car was burnt out, he has endured bricks thrown through his windows, threats to burn his house down and much else.

Christianity

 is more than a Religion it is the main cultural force, which makes us what we are.

The following article by Susan Elkin who has taught English for over 30 years appeared in the Daily Mail, on Tuesday, April 15th, 2003 during Holy Week of that year.

 

The cutting had been kept because of the message, which it so clearly outlined of our Christian Heritage and with the forthcoming Festival of Christmas only a few months away it is as well that we should all acknowledge ‘that Christianity is more than a religion’.

Understanding Easter

 For centuries, Christians have used this week [April 15, 2003] Holy Week to commemorate the last few days in the life of Christ.

 It starts on Palm Sunday when Christ is said to have entered Jerusalem for the last time, riding a borrowed donkey.  And it ends with the near-despair of Easter Eve on Saturday after the crucifixion, but before the bright hope of new life, which comes with the resurrection on Easter Sunday.

 General knowledge? It certainly should be.  But how many children know what Holy Week stands for, why it is so called and why it matters?

Alarmingly few.

 It is not an insult to other great world religions to remind ourselves that culturally Britain is a Christian country and has been for 14 centuries.

Our way-of-life, law and attitudes are deeply rooted in it.

 It doesn’t matter what any individual may or may not believe (and I, for the record, am not a Christian believer).

 However, much as we work at human and liberal understanding, especially during a war, this country is not predominately Moslem, Buddhist or Hindu. It is Christianity that underpins European thought, and children being educated as young British citizens have a right to understand that.

 Christianity has the ‘advantage’ of being a potentially pretty tale and an excuse for a sentimental wallow.

 But there is nothing remotely nice about the events of Holy Week. So although children are accustomed on a daily basis to TV screens full of graphic and horrifying violence, schools seem to shy away from the crucifixion story.

 What do they do instead? 

Like the rest of our shallow, secularised and anything but spiritual society, they look anywhere other than to the Bible for the naff and romantic version of Easter.

 

The result?

For most children, Easter is just a spring festival and a holiday, one reduced to a season of boot fairs and chocolate guzzling.  School halls are full of pre-Christian fertility symbols, although few recognise them as that.  Rabbits, chicks and eggs are everywhere. There is hardly a cross in sight.

 

One school recently got publicity for forbidding the consumption of hot cross buns in case the crosses upset Moslem pupils.

 

It is scandalous that children are passing through our schools without being taught in depth and in detail about the stories and the thinking, which gave rise to Christianity.  And that doesn’t mean just the pretty or easy bits.

 Of course, because we have children of many cultures in our schools-and it is vital to promote tolerance-it makes sense to celebrate major non –Christian festivals as well.

 

But it is Christianity, which should have primacy because of where we are.  Young Britons of all backgrounds should learn how Christianity came to our country.

They should know, too, about the later buildings of that astonishing heritage – the great cathedrals- and be taken to visit one.   What better time than Easter for this?  The national Curriculum for Religious Education is taught according to syllabuses agreed and approved locally rather than set nationally.

 The need to provide every child with his or her spiritual entitlement is at the heart of every syllabus.  How can you do that properly without providing information and ideas?

 The conflict between good and evil and the need to come to terms with the mysteries of life and death are central to spiritual thinking across all faiths.

 Children need to explore the differences between right and wrong too.  What better peg than the Holy Week story for discussing morality.

 Children in schools should study the four gospel versions of the main stories, learning that the details differ considerably and why, a basic ‘media studies’ lesson about reporting of events and how to read accounts critically.

 What a great opportunity to keep alive the King James Bible, too. With its powerful poetic simplicity, it is the most important work of literature published in English.

 For hundreds of years much of our high art and music has drawn its inspiration from Christian mythology.  How can a child appreciate Michelangelo’s Pieta or the profoundly spiritual ‘He was Despised’ from Handel’s Messiah if they don’t know the story of Holy Week?

 Wishy-washy, politically correct teachers and syllabus compilers have no right to deny young people informed access to some of the greatest of all works of art.

 Christianity is more than a religion.  In Britain it is the main cultural force, which has made us what we are.  So it is time schools recognised that it is too important to be reduced to a furry toy or a bit of chocolate confectionary.

 FOR THE many men in her life, it was love at first sight. ‘I was captivated by her sheer beauty,’ declared one of her eminent lovers, a government minister.

 

‘She was slimly built with a beautifully proportioned body and graceful curves just where they should be. She was every young man’s dream.

 

‘Mind you, she was what mother called a fast girl. I was advised to approach her gently. But once safely embraced in her arms, I found myself reaching heights of delight I had never before experienced.

 

IT WAS NOT A WOMEN that Captain Harold Balfour Under-Secretary of State in the pre-war Ministry of Air, was drooling over back in the thirties [The Gathering Storm years] after his first meeting with HER. It was the British fighter plane that would change the course of history -the

 

Spitfire

 

But for all his passion, even he could not have predicted what a battle-winner she would prove to be. Not that she would come to be the very icon of British guts and defiance. Nor that decades later -into the 21st century in fact-the sight of her flying over London on special anniversaries would bring tears to the eyes of grown men and women.

 

The promise of a Spitfire in the skies can still lure thousands to an Air Show, just for a glimpse of those elegant lines, the purr of that Rolls-Royce engine and all the history and glamour, death and glory, packed into her 31ft fuselage and 37ft wing-span.

 

TOMORROW

Sunday the 5th March 2006 is another historic anniversary.

 

It is 70 years to the day since the very first

 

Spitfire

 

Prototype climbed into the skies at

 

Eastleigh in Hampshire

 

-half its fuselage covered in a dirty yellowish-green wash, the rest rough and unpainted.

 

Captain ‘Mutt’ Summers, the Test Pilot, took her up to 3,000 ft and had her back on the ground in 8 minutes later. But in that short time in the air, the prototype won him over.

 

“the handling qualities of this machine are remarkably good “,

 

he wrote in the Test-Flight Log.

 

Destiny awaited. Two days later, on March 7-1936, the troops of a resurgent Germany under Chancellor Adolf Hitler marched over the border to reclaim the Rhineland it had been forced to give up after losing the World War I.

 

The first steps had been taken towards the conflict for which, in every sense, the SPITFIRE was made.

 

It is difficult to overstate her impact on events. The Spitfire’s revolutionary design with its extra edge of speed and manoeuvrability stopped the German Messerschmitts in 1940 that until then had had no match in the skies over Europe.

 

But what these brave men -and many among the generations who had followed -never realised was that the Spitfire so nearly didn’t make it to the drawing board. In a desperate race against time, its brilliant creator Reg. Mitchell was fighting cancer as he put the finishing touches to his design for the aircraft.

 

He lived to see his creation make it into the skies -but died in 1937, two years before the outbreak of the war and never having seen the leanest, meanest fighting machine of its age in combat.

 

He was just 42 years old.

 

Reg Mitchell, or ‘R J’ as he was known is a name generally lost on all but air aficionados these days. So who was he?

 

A new book by his son, Gordon Mitchell, gives a glimpse into the life of this little-known engineering genius.

 

He was a son of a headmaster in Stoke and from his earliest days delighted in making things. He even built his own lathe. He left school at 16, became an apprentice in a railway engineering works and soon graduated to the drawing office.

 

Here his outstanding inventiveness quickly became apparent. Wanting to spread his wings, as it were, he applied for a job at the Supermarine Aviation in Southampton, a firm setting out in the infant business of seaplanes and flying boats.

 

RJ had stumbled on his life’s work and the outlet for his considerable talent.

 

He shot up the hierarchy until, just 25; he was Chief Designer and Chief Engineer with the job of creating the fastest seaplanes in the world.

 

Time and again Mitchell’s planes were entered for the Schneider Trophy, an International Flying Contest over water. His success rate was remarkable as he learned how to streamline an aircraft to get every last knot of speed out of her.

 

In between the wars, with the help of the expert team he built at Supermarine, he designed no fewer than 24 different aircraft. A shy man with a slight stammer, he never pushed himself forward for the headlines his Schneider successes were increasingly grabbing.

 

He gave that glory to the pilots whom he admired for their courage, the more so when two died in accidents in his experimental planes.

 

But if reserved in public, he was a martinet in the office, typically standing staring at his drawing board for hours puffing on his pipe as he worked out complex problems. It was a foolish employee who interrupted him deep in thought.

 

At home, son Gordon remembered flashes of temper, followed by long moody silences. ‘He had no time for anyone he considered a fool and could be rude if the individual concerned did not quickly get the message.

 

Then again, he had great charm, his son recalled, and a sense of fun. When not preoccupied with work, his blue eyes shone and his smile was warm.

 

Mitchell was a very British genius, quiet, retiring, never personally pushy. Nor would he ever be rich, for all his exceptional talent and success.

 

At Supermarine (later part of Vickers), his pay as Chief Designer began at £1,200 a year rising by £100 every December until it reached £2,500.a handsome enough sum for those days and equivalent to £76,000 today.

 

Even after being appointed a Director, he would remain essentially a well-paid employee, in an era when results were not rewarded with share options and ‘fat cat’ bonuses. The patents for his inventions stayed with the company.

 

He brought a large detached house with peaceful gardens and a live in maid in the suburbs, played tennis and golf

And took family holidays at Bournemouth.

 

He was never one for the high life, despite the fast and wealthy international aviation set he sometimes dealt with. He preferred the company of his fellow workers, for whom he had great admiration. His best night out was with the lads at the drawing -room party.

 

His one indulgence was a Rolls Royce car, but since Sir Henry Royce was a fellow engineer and collaborator, that was not surprising.

But by 1933 Mitchell was harbouring a grim secret: He had been diagnosed with bowel cancer. He had a major operation and was fitted with a colostomy bag. Inventive man that he was, he even designed a better bag to conceal his disability.

 

A lesser man would have stopped work, but Mitchell was driven. By the mid-thirties, the world of peaceful international flying competitions began to change to one of more deadly and warlike rivalries. As a result, the Air Ministry in London sought tenders for a fast ‘killer’ fighter plane.

 

Mitchell’s first attempt was a flop. It had an open cockpit and a fixed undercarriage and could reach only 230 mph, 20mph short of the Ministry’s specification and a long way off his 400mph seaplanes.

 

Despite the terrible pain and distress of his illness, he stayed at his design desk as he smoothed out the Spitfire’s problems ahead of her first Test Flight.

 

In the next design, he retained just the name-

 

Spitfire

 

-suggested by the company’s chairman Sir Robert Mclean. It was what he called his feisty daughter, Ann.

 

Everything else changed. The shape of the wings went straight to elliptical. Against all conventional thinking, he also made the wings thin rather than thick. A sliding cockpit canopy gave the pilot al-round vision while reducing drag.

 

A Rolls Royce Merlin engine completed the transformation, and it was the prototype -K5054 - that flew that day 70 years ago.

 

Twelve weeks later, the RAF had its first go in the new fighter; Flight Lieutenant Humphrey Edwardes-Jones took her up at Martlesham Heath, the test aerodrome in Suffolk. He almost crashed her.

 

A revolutionary aspect of the

 

Spitfire

 

-were wheels that retracted into the wings when in flight to make her more aerodynamic. As he came in to land he almost forgot to drop the undercarriage, and only just recovered in time.

 

His verdict, telephoned to the Air Ministry was that the Spitfire was

 

‘delightful to handle’

 

-and would be easy for the pilots to learn to fly-as long as they remembered to put the wheels down! Eight days later, the Ministry ordered 310 at a cost of £1.25 million (£38m at today’s prices.)

 

It was Mitchell’s triumph - and with that over, he turned his attention for designing a better, faster bomber for the RAF.

But he ran out of time. In February 1937, in exasperation, he told a visitor:

 

‘I who have so much to do, have only until June.’

 

The next month he finally stopped work.

 

Characteristically, he worried that he was letting people down by not being able to finish the job he had started. Letters from colleagues high and low assured him

 

he had done far more than most.

 

He made one last effort to live, flying by private plane to a cutting edge cancer clinic in Vienna. The treatment did not work.

 

After five weeks the doctors sent him home to die. He sat in his garden, often with the local vicar, and in June, the month he predicted, he died.

 

‘I just felt numb,’ his son, then aged 16, recalled, ‘but I could comprehend that at least he was no longer in pain’

 

Meanwhile, the Spitfire, one of the greatest single-seater fighters of all time was on its way into mass production. The first of more than 20,000 rolled of the production lines in 1938.

 

It would be another two years before it’s

With Hawker Hurricanes, the other British fighter plane, Spitfires soared over Southern England.

 

In the summer of 1940

‘FEW’

 

-fought and won that crucial confrontation with the Luftwaffe.

 

The Spitfires took on the enemy Messerschmitt fighters that protected the German bomber formations. The slower Hurricanes then moved in to down the defenceless bombers.

 

It was a joint victory, but in truth, it was the

 

SPITFIRE

 

-that made the crucial difference and for which

Reg Mitchell

 

-remains a largely forgotten hero.

 

His son, now 85, feels certain his father’s death robbed Britain of yet more world-beating inventions. That bomber, the project he never finished was one example. He was designing it to fly at top speed of 360mph, 25 per cent faster than the Lancaster and the Wellington.

 

How much quicker might Bomber Command have got on top of the Luftwaffe, if its crews had been flying Reg Mitchell’s creation?

 

How much sooner might the war have been won?

 

The greatest tragedy of Reg Mitchell’s death at such a sadly early age was that thousands of other lives that given the chance, he might also have saved.

SIR- A man kicked to death outside Henley police station as it reported that 900 stations have been closed.  Thousands more rural post offices are to be shut. Our Armed Forces are imperfectly equipped for the wars to which the Government has committed them. Gangs of feral youths roam the streets. Britain is in social collapse due to the decline in traditional family values.

 

WHY?

It's because a financially incompetent welfare state and a political determination not to be judgmental about wayward sections of society have destroyed the fabric of this once great nation. This will go on doing so unless a political leadership emerges with the courage to tackle the problem.

SIR- The Closure of police stations is yet another issue that is dealt with through spin rather than honesty.

The reality of the 24-hour police stations is that they provide reassurance to residents and the fact that patrolling officers come in and out of the premises at various times means that there is a guaranteed visible police presence in the local area. When these premises are closed officers may be based a significant distance away and local police will have to rely on a chance patrol to see a police officer.

The next issue for spin rather than substance will be police community support officers, just about the only visible "police" presence in my area. it won't be long before the Government presents these well-meaning, but under trained (when compared with police constables) officers as an integral part of overall police numbers on the streets.

SIR- There used to be two sub-post offices within a reasonable walking and cycling distance of my home. They were of course killed off by the Government. Now I must drive a considerable distance to a shopping centre wherein now lies our nearest post office.

This office is overwhelmed with customers -the queues are long and slow. Fortunately, as we stand patiently in line , we are entertained by an overhead television screen showing advertisements for mail services and displaying the proud message

"The Post Office - serving you at the heart of your community"

Real services have been replaced by media spin. Joined up Government in action

SIR- Our police station in Oxted became part-time a few years ago; about the same time as the crime rate went up.

Recently we had our first armed bank raid in Oxted High Street at midday. We have more chance of seeing a traffic warden than a policeman.

The Prime Minister announced yesterday that she is to take personal charge of solving Britain's acute housing crisis.

In next week's Budget, planning rules will be relaxed, social housing debt cancelled, stamp duty cut and billions of pounds will be pumped into house-building projects.

New homes will spring up across the land, on brownfield sites, in back gardens, on the rooftops of existing buildings even.

Yet Theresa May says it can all be achieved while protecting the Green Belt. Build up, not out, is the new mantra. Pile 'em high and sell 'em cheap.

Marvel as Mother Theresa morphs into Bob the Builder. Can we fix it? Yes we can!

But hang on a minute. Are we really going to need all these little boxes post Brexit?

Not if the Remain scaremongers are to be believed. They're like those deluded Japanese soldiers after Hiroshima, hiding out in the jungle, still fighting the last war.

Once we leave the EU, they warn, jobs will dry up and millions of immigrants will flee the country. Indeed, scared migrants are doing so already, forced out by mobs of knuckle-scraping neo-Nazis roaming the streets stirring up a hate crime epidemic.

The NHS is on the brink of collapse, as nurses and doctors who came here from overseas seek sanctuary in safe havens abroad.

Crops are left to rot in the fields, as agricultural workers return home to Eastern Europe. Soon you won't be able to hire a Polish plumber for love nor money. Pubs and restaurants will close their doors because they can't recruit foreign bar staff and waitresses. There won't be a car wash left anywhere in Britain.

All those Polski skleps which have taken over from Asian corner shops will go bankrupt overnight, as their customers retreat in droves to Warsaw and Gdansk. Our inner cities will become ghost towns and our public services will implode, shorn of hard-working immigrants run out of Britain, virtually at gunpoint.

That, at least, is the apocalyptic vision post Brexit painted by the fanatics still trying to perpetuate Project Fear. If they're right, then we won't need to build millions of new homes, since Brexodus — as it's being dubbed — will free up housing stock everywhere.

Rents and house prices will come crashing down as demand plummets and young people will be able to scale the housing ladder like Barbary apes. Dream on.

Like all the other horror stories invented by the Remoaners, Brexodus is a pack of lies. Far from foreign nationals fleeing Britain, they are continuing to flock here in record numbers. We don't have a housing crisis, we have a population crisis — driven almost exclusively by immigration. It's one of the main reasons people voted Leave.

MigrationWatch UK — which has been about the only body to tell the unvarnished truth about immigration over the past couple of decades — reports that eight out of ten new households established between 2000 and 2015 are made up of migrant families.

As these new arrivals age, it will put even more pressure on housing. MigrationWatch says we should consider, for instance, the number of young men — especially from Eastern Europe — currently living as many as a dozen or more to a house. In time, they will all want to start families and set up homes of their own.

MigrationWatch's Lord Green said: 'We have a major crisis over housing affecting huge numbers of people, especially the young. Yet the focus of debate is still on supply; nobody dares talk about demand and its principal driver, immigration.'

What's more, in the five years up to 2015, the number of households headed by someone born in Britain actually fell. So if there is a Brexodus, it is comprised of British nationals moving abroad, many saying they don't want to live in a country they no longer recognise.

The reality is the polar opposite of the Remoaners' propaganda about frightened migrants fleeing racist Britain and plunging us into an economic crisis.

In truth, the economy has performed pretty spectacularly since the referendum result — certainly better than the rest of Europe — creating an explosion in jobs which are being filled by workers from home and abroad.

For instance, the preposterous Vince Cable claimed that 10,000 foreign staff 'have walked away from the National Health Service because they don't think they're needed or wanted any more'. Yet just a few days ago, a forensic Mail investigation blew Vinnie's little fantasy out of the water.

At the end of June there were 3,181 more EU nationals working in the health service than in 2016. Yesterday, official Government figures from the Office for National Statistics showed there were 2.38 million EU nationals working in Britain — an increase of 112,000 on a year ago.

The number of Romanians and Bulgarians who have found jobs here now stands at almost 350,000, up by a third in the past 12 months. They have no incentive to scuttle off back to Bucharest and Sofia any time soon.

Last time anyone looked, the 10,000 Poles, Lithuanians and other assorted Eastern Europeans who have made their home in Boston, Lincolnshire — Britain's Brexit capital — showed no signs of upping sticks and sloping off home, pursued by the provisional wing of Ukip. Nor will they have to.

Despite the pig-headed intransigence and obstructionism of the EU's Brexit negotiators, determined to punish the British people for voting Leave, Mrs May has already guaranteed the rights of EU citizens living here. And it's not just the EU, either. Immigrants from all over the world are still making Britain their top destination, often risking life and limb to get here.

Why would they want to join a sinking ship? Are they all crazy? Are they really determined to make their new lives in a racist, basket-case, post-Brexit wilderness?

Or could it be, perhaps, that they are attracted here to join friends and family who report that Britain is a tolerant, civilised, multi-cultural country with a generous welfare system and a bright, independent future offering endless opportunity for economic advancement?

Millions of migrants are choosing Britain over the sclerotic countries of the bureaucratic, moribund EU. And will continue to do so once we leave and become again a confident, outward-looking nation, free to embrace the globe and all it has to offer.

That will mean embracing not just free trade but the brightest and best immigrants, too, who will continue to be welcomed here.

That, in turn, will mean they're all going to need somewhere to live. Which is why the Prime Minister is right to make housing a priority.

Our innate resolve and pragmatic nature suggests we will tackle this housing crisis with the determination and elan we have applied to every other crisis in our history.

Ignore the hysterical lies and predictions of doom, the death rattle of the Remoaners determined to sabotage Brexit by any means fair or foul.

Britain, home of Bob the Builder, will rise to the challenge.

Can we Brexit? Yes we can!

THE 'COVENANT OF SECURITY'

The Islamic concept of a 'Covenant of Security' means two things. Firstly, unbelievers who pay the Jizyah are entitled to the provision of security from the Khilafah, and secondly, a non-Islamic nation which provides shelter to Muslims is not regarded as Dar-al-Harb. It is the second meaning which is relevant to Britain today.

In practice, as long as Britain sheltered Islamic terrorists planning strikes against their own governments, and did not make war against islamic lands, Britain was safe from attack.  The turning of London into Londonistan, a haven for foreign jihadists, made Britain, in a perverse kind of way, a safer place.

Chief among advocates of the 'Covenant of Security' was Skeikh Omar Bakri, leader of al-Muhajiroun. The head of its Luton branch, Sayful Islam, said in April 2004 that he supported Osama Bin Laden "100 per cent" in the quest to achieve

"the worldwide domination of Islam"

but he would not engage in terror attacks in Britain

"as long as they allow us Muslims to live here in peace."

All that changed as events unfolded in 2004 as a result of 9/11.

The British Government arrested certain foreign nationals on suspicion of inciting terrorism, and, unable for human rights reasons to deport them, kept them interned without trial.

The second factor was Britain's active support in the American invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

In January 2005 Bakri determined that the covenant of security had ended and "the whole of Britain had become Dar-al-Harb."

British Muslims were obliged "to join the global Islamic camp against the global crusader camp" the latter of which included Britain. Six months later, the bombing campaign in London began.

Other British jihadists took a different line. Hassan Butt left al Muhajiroun because he disagreed that British-born Muslims were bound by the same covenant of security felt by foreigners, such as Bakri himself.  In an interview, Butt said British-born Muslim youth have no allegiance to this country: "Islamically, I agree that someone who runs from the Middle East-where people like me are persecuted-and says, 'Britain, I want you to protect me' has entered a covenant of security. They  say, 'look protect my life and as a result I won't do any harm to you.' That  I agree with 100 per cent, but most of our people, especially the youth are British citizens... They did not ask to be born here; neither did they ask to be protected by Britain....They  have no covenant. As far as I'm concerned, the Islamic hukum (order) that I follow, says that a person has no covenant whatsoever with the country in which they are born." (Prospect Magazine August 2005)
