EVERY national crisis should have its conspiracy theory.

This is mine. I don’t claim it is infallible. I cannot back it up with proof. So do not accept my word.

 

You may, if you wish, take this with a pinch of salt. Just so long as you do not mix the salt with 59 parts ammonium nitrate and 10 parts nitro-glycerine.  Otherwise you may have MI5 round knocking your door – if you have any door left after your experiments.

 

This, then, for what it is worth, is my theory. Not only is there no bomb – did anyone ever believe there was?—but there was no bomb conspiracy either. There are no bombers.

 

But to begin at the beginning or thereabouts. It is nowadays usual with each successive round-up of terror suspects for them to turn out to be British born, or at any rate to have been raised and educated HERE.

 

The fact gives them some insight into the British character.  This means that when we have another chaos crisis, we react in a predictable British way. This is, we grumble among ourselves, but complain only when someone tries to jump the MILE-LONG QUEUE.

 

Meanwhile new emergency regulations, such as no one allowed in the aircraft with braces on their trousers, are accepted with RESIGNATION.

 

When some small concession is offered, for instance a relaxation of the rule that babies in arms must be carried in a holdall, we wag our tails in GRATITUTE.

 

All these are meat and drink to the CHAOS SQUAD –

as we shall call them.

 

In a remarkable short time, under cover of our apathy, they have got what they wanted – a state of sheer FIASCO billed as CRITICAL and eventually downgraded to controlled PANIC or SEVERE just at the point when a 12-year- old boy strolls unchallenged through the GATWICK departure gate and on to an AIRCRAFT with

NO CREDENTIALS WHATEVER.

As the clouds drift away- not that there were any clouds in the first place- we find HEATHROW looking like a REFUGE CAMP

-with aircraft setting off MINUS half their PASSENGERS who are still wandering about like LOST SOULS in

DEPARTURE HALLS.

Those who have given up the ghost look for their keys which are in a suitcase on the other side of the airport, or possibly in NAIROBI, so they have to take a cab home and break the door down to gain ENTRY.

 

  Between ten and twenty thousand items of luggage have gone MISSING.

 

-while the boss of the

British Airports Authority

boasts that his staff, or those who turned up for work, have coped MAGNIFICENTLY.

 

Chaos complete. Mission accomplished. Everybody sues. A bill for millions.

 

AND NOT A SHOT FIRED.

 

And while some grudging dispensation may be made towards travellers in permitting them to take on board a small suitcase to accommodate a laptop or a pair of shoes but not both (are they mad- have they never heard of exploding shoes?) they must expect to take the rough with the rougher.

 

For even as some impositions are relaxed, others are imposed. For airports, it will never be glad morning again, as panic-mongers dream up new restrictions.

For instance, there is now some criticism – a warped reading of the British sense of FAIR-PLAY, I imagine – of the system of ‘profiling’ whereby suspects are picked upon for STOP and SEARCH

-because of their appearance and maybe the fact that they are carrying a prayer mat in their luggage.

 

Critics hold that profiling is racist. If it is, that can only mean no exceptions – and longer queues.  We have in fact, a profiling policy in airports for years.

-as you attempt to slink out of the airport without looking shifty, even though you may have nothing to look shifty about.

 

When I was young I had a naturally guilty expression, as many young people do – we won’t go into the reasons why – with the result that I was pulled in practically every time I shuffled out of an airport.  No harm came of this petty persecution, any more than profiling will offend travelling Muslims except those who – a substantial number, I agree are DETERMINED TO BE OFFENDED.

 

Meantime, before the

CHAOS SQUAD

-call up the next airport crisis, may we see an injection of

COMMON SENSE.

I grew up in a reasonably rough neighbourhood where windows were regularly broken, apples scrumped, pies abstracted from cooling window sills, but while PC Plod often gave chase, he rarely caught.  And when he did, it was ponderously to take down a name and address,

True, in later life when I was a junior reporter, I saw many a petty criminal stagger into the police court dock having fallen, so it was solemnly averred, against the cell door.

 

But our policemen didn’t strike children.

Of course the QUEEN under HER CONSTITUTIONAL ROLE can only 'Advise and Warn' HER MINISTERS but when the matter concerns the very LIFE of an INDEPENDENT STATE we expect that HER MAJESTY consider the arrangement to be AT AN END as it would make a MOCKERY of the PRIME IMPORTANCE of the MONARCH to protect our inherited Rights and Liberties which HER MINISTERS  are endeavouring TO GIVE AWAY. We as loyal subjects of the MONARCH who is the living embodiment of OUR RIGHTS and LIBERTIES  ask at this late stage with only months to the eradication of a FREE NATION STATE some veiled comments that HER MAJESTY will PROTECT our RIGHTS and LIBERTIES. As for the MORAL tone of the NATION STATE at this most crucial time in ENGLISH CONSTITUTIONAL HISTORY this matter should be left to CHURCH LEADERS who's responsibility it is to CARE for their FLOCKS particularly at this FESTIVAL of CHRISTMAS. IF HER MAJESTY'S SPEECH has not been pre-recorded  we ask HER MAJESTY to give those MILLIONS of HER subjects some hope that their PROTECTOR has NOT FORGOTTEN THEM.
