FORMER PRIME MINISTER SUPPORTS
TRADITIONAL VALUES
A ‘Declaration of Rights’
(To be maintained)
The
Daily Mail article of 25th October 2003 must have given great relief
and comfort to the majority of the citizens of this Realm, particularly as
former Prime Minister John Major has spoken the words. His words confirm what
we have always believed that ‘Mr Blair has undermined Parliament and
politicised the Civil Service. In particular, he points to Labour’s reliance on
spin over issues such as the war in Iraq’.
He further says’ It is fatal to the conduct of policy if
the word of any government is disbelieved until proven beyond doubt to be true.
The erosion of trust has now reached the point where it is undermining the
ability of Government to count on the trust of the people’.
…He
calls for an enquiry by a committee of senior privy counsellors – modelled on
that chaired by Lord Franks after the Falklands Conflict 20 years ago – to
dispel the impression that intelligence was distorted and misused.
Mr
Major says it would have been ‘inconceivable’ a few years ago for such a charge
to be levelled at a Prime Minister.
Although
he is a supporter of the decision to go to war, he says an Inquiry is the only
way to restore public faith in the integrity of Government. The inquires
already held by the Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee and the
Intelligence and Security committee are not enough.
The
former has a pro- labour bias and there is no guarantee that the latter saw all
the papers Major argues.
….
The [Democratic] system relies on the governing party recognising the true
temporary nature of its authority and not misusing it, he says.
…’
What I fear the Prime Minister may have failed to understand is the importance
and power of the traditions, customs and conventions that have shaped the
Values of our system of government and provided its checks and balances’.
He
adds: ‘New Labour, apparently contemptuous of our history, has swept away
centuries of institutional values. Rushed ill thought-through constitutional
changes have been introduced in the name of modernisation – changes that
imperil the soul of the constitution and leave democracy and freedom weaker and
poorer’.
We must all thank MR John Major for clearing the air –
once for all, because I’m sure many people were beginning to question their own
good sense and naturally instilled instinct regarding our Constitution. He is a
person who should know – a decent disinterested and honest and honourable
member of Her Majesty’s Privy Council has now put the record straight.
There is hope at last that other politicians will make their repentance and
to use the words of one of our great poets Oliver Goldsmith: ‘Our greatest glory consists not in never failing,
but in rising every time we may fail’.
It
had been said at another time in our history ‘ We appear to have no Heroes or unselfish
Statesmen [some] …
As
in the training of human life, so in national history, opportunity is as
powerful as purpose; and the new prospects that open as the nation advances in
political consciousness and culture, reveal occasions and modes of progress
which as soon as they are tried, are found to be more exactly the course for
which earlier training [tradition and custom] has prepared it than any
plan [as put forward by our present government] that might have
been consciously formed’. - Stubbs.
Finally,
we must applaud the Daily Mail and its reporter P.Eastham, and Mr John Major for this 21st century reaffirmation of
our ‘Declaration of Rights’.
* * *
‘Declaration of Rights’ was drawn up by the
House of Commons was confirmed by the House on the 25th October 1689
and was subsequently embodied in the Bill of Rights.
William,
and Mary (daughter of James11) accepted the Crown. The purpose of the Act was
to detail the illegalities of James II after his abdication and flight from the
country. It must be remembered that as with Charles 1, so with James the II,
who both wished to support the Foreign policy of France and agreed to be aided by Foreign troops in case of
Rebellion.
Within
the last few days (26/10/03) we have been informed by others that it is the
intention of this Government to send all our troops out of this country to Germany
and France and to barrack in this country German and French troops. This would tally if this
Government were concerned about a rebellion in this country. If these
allegations are false we welcome Mr Blair to deny that this is the
purpose of his Government. We look forward to the Commons receiving a truthful
statement.
We
are sure that the majority of the people of this Realm look forward to the day
when Mr Tony Blair is impeached in Our House of Commons and punished
with his adherents for their treachery to their Queen and Country.

What an enormous magnifier is tradition!
