BACK in December 2003, I told NATO Military Conference that George Bush’s decision to invade and occupy Afghanistan in 2001 was a colossal error, which had plunged the U.S and her Allies (meaning in particular Tony Blair’s Britain) into an endless military entanglement with no exit strategy.

 

I pointed out that Bush and Blair had opened up a new and extended flank vulnerable to attack by the enemies of the West, whether Al Qaeda or Taliban.

 

And I noted that the writ of President Karzai’s regime did not run beyond the range of NATO guns, while the rest of Afghanistan lay under the control of warlords or the Taliban.

Over the past two and a half years my prophecies and warnings have come hideously true, even if it is only very recently that the dire nature of Britain’s own entanglement has hit the headlines.

 

In the past three weeks,

--British soldiers have been killed by the resurgent Taliban, while our

 

GENERALS

 

-warn that our field force in Helmand Province of fewer than 4,000 soldiers is too small to cope with the task loaded on it by Blair - that of peace-enforcement across a vast and hostile REGION.

[We now understand that the cutting edge of the force is approximately

-front line troops on the ground.]

 

Devastation

 

Are Blair and his sofa strategists looking to find some way out of what is clearly going to be a nasty and protracted guerrilla war, costly in British?

BLOOD and GRIEF?

 

Do they show any sign f realising that the attempt to create a stable democratic regime is a FUTILE exercise in IDEALISTIC DREAMING?

 

NO! On the contrary,

 

Mein Fuhrer Blair

 

-       has promised to commit yet more soldiers to his foredoomed campaign.

 

BUT why did BUSH and BLAIR choose to invade Afghanistan in the FIRST PLACE

 

-given that most of British Imperial campaigns there in the Victorian age ended in DISASTER, and that given, too, that a Soviet Army much larger than today’s NATO occupation force suffered a humiliating defeat at Afghan hands in the 1980s?

 

The answer lies in the sensational destruction by Al Qaeda of the

WORLD TRADE CENTRE

 

-in New York on September 11, 2001.

 

-and the resulting hurt and outrage of the AMERICAN PEOPLE.

 

We must remember that this was a major hit on American continental soil since the end of the Civil War in 1865.

 

We must remember that this was out of the blue sky of peacetime to strike a NATION

Which had come through the two

WORLD WARS

-with its HOMELAND unscathed -no ‘Blitz’ as endured by British cities at German hands, no appalling devastation such as that inflicted on German cities by British and U.S bomber fleets.

 

So in the aftermath of 9/11 there was irresistible political pressure on Washington to carry out some dramatic counter strike against Al Qaeda. But in any case, George W.Bush and his hawkish cronies like Dick Cheney and Donald Rimsfeld believed that America’s status as the world’s single SUPERPOWER

-absolutely demanded a counter-strike.

 

It is also fair to say that the prevailing post-9/11 mood in official Washington came near to funk, if not PANIC.

 

In other words, the U.S. agenda was dictated by Al Qaeda’s attacks on 9/11. My own belief has always been that Osama Bin Laden’s entirely rational purpose in launching these attacks was to trap the U.S (and ‘the West’) into a long-term global conflict with the Islamic World.

 

George. W.Bush’s declaration of ‘war on terror’ provided the proof that Bin Laden had brilliantly succeeded.

 

Britain became caught up in this confrontation because on the very ay of 9/11, Tony Blair, in a typically emotional but ill-thought-out response, pledged Britain’s unconditional loyalty to

Bushite America.

 

The Taliban regime in Afghanistan supplied the obvious target for the U.S. since they harboured Al Qaeda’s training camps and they refused an American demand to give up Bin Laden.

 

Thanks to the wonders of high-tech airpower, the invasion of Afghanistan proved a walkover. After all, the Taliban defence was not so much ‘Third World’ as ‘Umpteenth World’.

 

The training camps were found and demolished. Al Qaeda and its trainee terrorists either fled into the mountains along the Afghan-Pakistan border or finished up in the American concentration camp at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

 

So in sheer military terms, a stunning success- a one in which British Special Forces played their part.

 

Now came the aftermath, as year by year America (and now NATO as well) was dragged ever deeper into a morass of political and tribal complications-and the object of the EXERCISE shifted to the ERADICATION of AL QAEDA in Afghanistan to a cloudy project of converting the country to

WESTERN VALUES.

 

[For instance the Blair Government has sent a ‘Gender’ awareness and ‘Health and Safety ‘workshops to Afghanistan as their solution to the critical state of affairs in June 2006.]

Failure

 

 

Yet, despite this, the invasion and the occupation have failed to achieve Washington’s strategic objective of dealing a lethal blow to global Islamic terrorism.

 

Neither the U.S nor the world in general is safer today. Far from crippling Al Qaeda’s world-wide franchises, the number of terrorists attacks has actually risen compared with the years before the invasion, and the terrorist targets have widened to include \Madrid in 2004 and London last year [2005].

Instead of invading Afghanistan in 2001, Washington should have played a long and subtle game, undermining Al Qaeda by penetrating its cells.

 

Now we are stuck fast in Afghanistan, just as we are in Iraq. Indeed to invade and occupy Iraq in 2003 was an even bigger blunder, because there was no connection between Saddam Hussein’s regime and

Al Qaeda.

 

NOR HAD THE

 

Anglo-American invasion of Iraq

 

ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE

 

‘WAR on TERRORISM’

 

NOR WITH

 

‘WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION’

 

-but everything to do with the fantasy of the neo-cons in Washington (shared by Blair) of democratising the whole MIDDLE EAST

-with he removal of Saddam as the

FIRST STAGE

House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee

 

-has just confirmed that the INVASION and OCCUPATION

of IRAQ in 2003

-has served as a spur to Al Qaeda terrorism within the UK/

 

NOW THERE’S A SURPRISE!

Invasion

 

All these grim tidings should make us think afresh about the first of Blair’s three wars, now largely dropped from the nation’s consciousness, but which served to confirm him in a fatal belief in FOREIGN INTERVENTIONS.

 

That [FIRST] war ended seven years ago, when Yugoslav forces withdrew from the Yugoslav State of Kosovo and NATO occupation troops took their place.

 

At the time, Alistair Campbell’s propaganda machine sold NATO’s supposed VICTORY as a triumph for Blair. After all, hadn’t he persuaded NATO leaders that the ‘ethnic cleansing’ of the Albanian population of Kosovo by Yugoslav police and soldiers must be stopped, by WAR if necessary?

 

And unlike in Afghanistan and Iraq, there has certainly been no long-lasting insurgency against NATO occupation, no mounting tally of NATO body bags. Instead the crisis in this, the first of Tony Blair’s wars, came during the actual fighting.

 

The NATO bombing campaign failed to force the Yugoslav Army t retreat from Kosovo, or even damage it. Later ferocious NATO strikes on civilian targets across Serbia likewise failed to break Serbian morale and compel Slobodan Milosevic to accept NATO terms.

 

Since NATO lacked enough troops in the REGION to mount a ground offensive in Kosovo. NATO leaders were confronted with the total collapse of THEIR strategy.

 

ONLY Russian diplomatic intervention, persuaded Milosevic to evacuate Kosovo, saved NATO - and BLAIR in particular- from

DEFEAT

and

HUMILIATION.

 

And even ten the Kosovan War can hardly be rated a great success because its main result was to replace ethnic cleansing of Kosovar Albanians by the Serbs with ethnic cleansing of Kosovar Serbs by the Albanians.

What’s more, NATO is still stuck there with little hope of a political solution

[Sounds just like Blair almost everything he touches even NOW brings DISGRACE and DISHONOUR

-to our COUNTRY.]

Sadly, this TRUTH about the FAILURE of the Kosovo War has been concealed from the British public - and forgotten by BLAIR himself, when vanity propelled him into joining his chum George W. Bush in fresh military meddling in

AFGHANISTAN and IRAQ.

TO UNDERSTAND the always-doomed Afghan adventure, it helps to know the military mind. Asked to undertake a daunting task by the Government, senior officers will loyally say that they will give it their best. More junior officers may mutter uneasily, but that’s another matter.

 

The mission’s difficulties mount and all the generals say they need more troops. Their whole background discourages then from saying that

 

THE TASK IS HOPLESS.

 

THE MORASS BECKONS.

 

 

Vietnam was a classic case.

 

From 16,000 military ‘advisers’ who were initially going to solve the problem, American troop numbers rose eventually to

-with generals still pleading for MORE.

The Afghanistan problem is even CLEARER

- than Vietnam

 

The Afghans have always relished fighting and especially fighting invaders. They can also draw on additional, almost unlimited numbers of Islamic militants from elsewhere, particularly Pakistan

 

NOW our generals are asking for reinforcements. The official Tory Opposition - as blind as bats -

supports the call.

 

Shadow Defence Secretary Liam Fox positively eggs the Government ON. The dreaded cross-party syndrome applies again, AS WITH IRAQ.

 

Remembering the military maxim -

Never reinforce FAILURE

-the generals should STAND UP to the GOVERNMENT.
