To
Serbs, an Independent Kosovo is anathema-Kosovo is their Jerusalem.

Just for once, the self-pity of the
Serbs may be justified.
by

(Belgrade)
[Daily Telegraph-February28-2007]
Serbs are masters of self-pity and
their recent history has provided plenty of opportunity for them to
display their talents.
Once the proud heart of the former
Yugoslavia, Serbia has been reduced to an indignant blooded torso. First
Slovenia then Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia and even Montenegro
have been dismembered by various means from the Serbian-dominated corpus
that under President it was a non-aligned European state of some
consequence.
Now comes the most painful amputation
of all: the loss of Kosovo, Serbia -by then reduced to Serbia and
Montenegro -effectively lost the Albanian - majority province after
Nato's 1999 military intervention to prevent Slobodan Milosevic's last
hurrah at ethnic cleansing. It has since been administered by the UN.
The united Nations envoy for Kosovo,
Marti Ahtisaari this month presented a plan to steer the disputed
province towards independence. Out of respect for Serbian sentiment it
may not contain the word independence, but that is its aim.
The new Kosovo would have the right to
enter into international agreements and apply for membership of the UN,
World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
It would have its own flag and anthem,
and a lightly armed military force. The plan grants Kosovo's 100,000
remaining Serbs and other non-Albanians extensive rights and
protections, including quotas in parliament and government, the police
and civil service.
This being the Balkans, the proposal is
good enough for nobody.
The Kosovo Albanians want full
independence now, despite failing to live up to the standards of human
rights and the RULE of LAW
-demanded by the UN.
The Serb minority has periodically been
hounded, abused and on occasion murdered by the Albanians.
To the Serbs, an independent Kosovo is
anathema.
Kosovo is their Jerusalem
Its monasteries and churches are
considered the well-spring of their Orthodox civilisation, while its
sacred fields include the site of their noblest hour-a defeat at the
hands of the Ottoman army, in 1389, elevated to such mythical status
that it has been central in forming the national conviction that the
world is against the Serbs.
There is a lot of hot air spoken in
Belgrade about never accepting a new neighbour, about how separation
would contravene the constitution, though even the ardent nationalists
know that the country has neither the money nor the stomach for another
fight [particularly after the severe and devastating American air
bombardment on Belgrade and other locations] despite clinging to the
notions of a greater Serbia that caused so much trouble in the 1990's
war.
Serbia was last week found guilty by
the UN's International Court of Justice for failing to prevent the
genocidal slaughter of 8,000 Bosnia Muslims at Srebrenica, the worst
atrocity of it's kind in post-war Europe. So the Serbs may not be the
easiest people with which to sympathize, but on Kosovo they have a
point.
[While we are on the subject of
atrocities in post -war Europe what about the atrocities involving
millions in Africa which the International Court's of Justice have
been slow bring the perpetrators to justice and closer to home the
illegal invasion of Iraq by the American/Anglo forces and the
devastation of a country and the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent
Iraqis. It seems there is one UN rule for Europe and another for the
rest of the world. Will we ever see Bush and Blair taken before the UN
's International Court of Justice for their crimes which have
destabilized the Middle East region and may even lead to further
conflict with Iran and with the Arab world.]
A Serbian colleague, who is far more
balanced than most of his compatriots, which isn't saying much, pointed
out some historical facts.
Albanians first arrived in Kosovo (from
Albania itself) in the 15 and 15th centuries when many Serbs fled
Turkish rule. Even 100years ago the population division was 70/30 in
favour of the Serbs.
There was another exodus of the Serbs
into Serbia proper during the Second World War as Tirana joined the AXIS
Germany/Italy]. Tito then encouraged Kosovan autonomy to disguise
Serbian dominance of the Yugoslavian federation.
But what changed the province was
birth-rate. The Muslim Albanians produced much larger families than the
Orthodox Serbs, and by the 1970's were overtaking their ethnic rivals.
They now make up 90per cent of the population.
"What does this say? That the people
who have the most babies win"
- asked my friend.
[This is an object lesson from history
that is becoming a reality in our own once United Kingdom. The arrival
of millions of immigrants of a different culture and expectation over
the past ten years particularly will be an increasing threat in the
years ahead. Only controlled immigration with the interest of ALL will
ensure that the indigenous population culture will prevail along side
the newcomers who by integration will strengthen rather than weaken our
Society.

To Continue:
Independence will probably be seen as a
mistake one day but it appears to be a fait accompli
What the UN must do now is lean on
Kosovo's leadership to acknowledge its responsibilities and ensure the
Serb minority is treated well, lest another Balkans conflict breaks out.
It must be best to get the job of granting Kosovo its dubiously won
freedom done quickly. and give the Serbians something new to moan about.

[The above statement appears flippant
to the extreme as history is littered with examples of broken promises
which have resulted in greater conflict and loss of life in the future.
The UN were found a cause in Kosovo but after interfering they have now
left it to providence to monitor.]

In THE TIMES of Saturday, 9th June
2007:
Kosovo
Russia continues to block the
Independence of Kosovo [under Albanian
Freedom Fighters] from Serbia and the Russian President Mr Putin let it
be known that Serbia was not ready to accept such a step. Pressure was
put on Mr Putin during talks with Mr Sarkozy but , as one diplomat
conceded
"He hit a brick wall".
Mrs Merkel announced that EU political
directors would discuss Kosovo next week.
"Time is running out"
-the German Chancellor said.
[Well it had to come to this as Serbian
territory had been invaded by so-called Albanian Freedom Fighters with
the collusion of the German Chancellory as the facts have already been
disclosed -with NATO the fall-guy should things not go as planned. And
who have we to blame for this stalemate our own Tony -soon to crusade as
a Man of Peace - who connived with Germany to get an historic part of
Serbian territory invaded.
As we have said on other occasions
whatever differences there are between Mr Putin and Tony Blair we would
rather have a man who loves his country and passionate about its borders
and concerned by EU encirclement than the scheming traitor Tony Blair
who will sell our country to the EU -if he is not stopped by the end of
June-2007
Of course there is still a strong bond
between Germany and Russia but that is for economic purposes. ]
