THIS SOUNDS like the stuff of an Ealing comedy: a trade union for soldiers. ‘Brother Sergeant-Major, victimisation has gone far enough. B Company will start an immediate work-to -rule with a ban on night patrols, kit inspection and packs in excess of 30 pounds.

 

Yet in cold reality, there is today serious talk among current and former serving personnel about forming a

 

British Armed Forces Federation

 

Its objectives

 

as listed on an unofficial military website, would be to represent members’ interests, and to offer ‘appropriate advocacy and consultation to protect and improve accommodation, medical and welfare services, resettlement and appropriate support to personnel facing

 

COURT MARTIAL’

 

The originators of the scheme - members of a web-site for the Armed Forces called the

 

ARMY RUMOUR SERVICE

 

-declare explicitly that this would NOT promote action or insubordination.’

 

They make the point that other allied countries, including Australia, have had Armed Forces Staff Associations

for years.

 

But be in no doubt about the mood in which such a notion can even be mooted: today’s

British Servicemen and Women

Are fed up to the teeth with the fashion in which they are being sacrificed to the whims of politicians and the mercy of lawyers.

Betrayal

 

There is a loss of confidence in the ranks, a growing sense of betrayal, brought on by high-profile Courts Martial and the erosion of TRADITION and DISCIPLINE

 

For anyone who cares about the proud history of Britain’s Armed Forces and the maintenance of their excellence, these are bad days.

 

As usual, responsibility lies overwhelmingly with civilian politicians from the Prime Minister downwards; who have sent troops into action again and again, yet disgracefully neglected their interests.

 

Recruiting and retentions are languishing, in part because so many soldiers are committed to Bliar’s unpopular war in Iraq.

 

Yesterday, Defence Secretary John Reid announced that the British deployment in Afghanistan is being extended to around 4,400 men.

 

There is much unhappiness about the Afghan plan. It represents a political figleaf, not a credible military operation. Britain is allegedly to spearhead a NATO commitment to reconstruction, rather than pursue insurgents.

 

But British soldiers will have to bear the most dangerous share of the burden. Our Nato partners are pitifully unwilling to put their own soldiers in harm’s way, or allow them even to use their weapons in the course of DUTY.

 

A few thousand troops, a woefully inadequate number for this huge, wild country, are being deployed in a pathetic attempt to stem Afghanistan’s descent into the world’s largest

NARCOTIC STATE.

 

When the millions of Afghans depend for their livelihoods on the heroin trade, what on earth are a handful of Nato soldiers -most more familiar with their teddy bears than their rifles - supposed to do about it?

 

No one can give a credible answer to this question.

 

Yet the Afghan deployment is going ahead because Tony Blair is politically committed to it.

The most likely beneficiaries are the British Human Rights lawyers who have already built booming businesses in Iraq seeking to prosecute soldiers accused of abuses and ‘WAR CRIMES’ against civilians They will surely find a host of eager new clients among the poppy fields of the Helmond region.

 

The Human Rights Industry is making life a misery for officers and NCOs throughout the Armed Forces who believe that decisions to prosecute servicemen have been taken out of their hands and are largely politically inspired.

They are increasingly uncertain about the limits of their own authority, and appalled by the readiness of the Ministry of Defence to allow lawyers free range across training grounds and battlefields.

 

The Chiefs of Staff have been instructed that they must make no public comment on legal cases involving ‘WAR CRIMES’ brought against those under their command even when, as so often, these collapse. Not surprisingly, the deafening silence at the top has been deeply damaging.

 

Consider the predicament of those who command British troops today. Because of the chronic cost overruns in defence equipment programmes, for which officers at the sharp end are blameless, money is short. Soldiers are poorly paid in comparison with their civilian counterparts.

 

Lagging

 

Although barrack buildings are being slowly improved, many servicemen in Britain occupy substandard accommodation. Training programmes, especially large-scale formation exercises, have been slashed. Equipment deliveries lagging.

 

Infantry numbers have been cut, at a time when the Government demands ever more ‘boots on parade’ to serve its purposes. Even greater demands are made upon ever fewer uniformed men and women.

 

WHO WOULD BE SURPRISED THAT THE FORCES FEEL UNLOVED?

 

There is widespread criticism of a lack of leadership at the top. Many serving officers ask

Sir Michael will shortly retire, and move into a cosy and prestigious post of Governor of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea.

What a pity that it is too late for the General to take lessons in leadership from the Chelsea pensioners.

John Reid, who succeeded the disastrous Geoff Hoon as Defence Secretary, is a much more popular figure than his predecessor. He makes all the right noises. YET Reid has yet to show that he can deliver what is needed: more cash for those at the sharp end and a high-profile offensive to get lawyers [to bugger off] and off the soldiers’ backs and to restore confidence in the ranks.

 

[While Tony Bliar is still around there will be no change - in fact it will get worse and soon it will be impossible to stop the destruction of our Armed Forces because that is in reality what he is about. He wants no reminder of a British Army and its Tradition which gets in the way of his only love-child a European Army with our troops stripped of their historic connections so as not to embarrass our old enemies.]

 

It seems fantastic that the Armed Forces should suffer so extensively at the hands of Lord Goldsmith the Attorney -General and a man almost AS COMPREHENSIVELY DISCREDITED AS Tony Bliar by the Iraq War, and the frankly duplicitous advice he gave about its legality.

 

Enfeebled

 

Again and again when legal intervention is proposed in military conduct, the droning mantra is recited by MoD officials:

 

‘Under the terms of the European Human Rights Act we have no choice.’

 

And that is before mentioning Health and Safety legislation, another curse upon realistic training for warriors.

 

The US Army to day possesses a critical advantage over our own:

 

American law custom and practice acknowledge that it is unrealistic to impose civilian standards upon military life. In recent years most European armies have become so enfeebled that they have lost all sight of the fact that they exist to fight.

 

Unless somebody takes a grip at the top, British Forces, for so long among our proudest possessions, will go the same way as the Dutch and Germans. On an unofficial website this week

and conditions did improve as shown in the condition of OUR Senior Service today.

 

Of course quite rightly it will be mentioned that

‘A Soldiers Oath of Allegiance

binds him unquestionably to the Queen and thus the actions and decisions of HER Government.

 

This is TRUE but the present situation with regard to the illegal war in Iraq and the almost destruction of our country’s centuries long Representative Government leads one to declare that the Queen’s First Minister has as with many other Ministers of State over the last 40 years have broken their

HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN ELIZABETH II
