BRITAIN'S voting system is 'archaic' and divisive' and does not represent the will of millions, a pressure group has argued. The Electoral Reform Society, which has campaigned for proportional representation for 130 years, claimed last month's General Election was the most disproportionate ever. It said UKIP would have WON up to 80 seats using the type of PR used in many European nations, while the GREENS would have got 20. UKIP and the GREENS received 5MILLION VOTES, but under the FIRST-PAST-THE-POST system ended up with ONE MP each. An E R S-commissioned survey said under PR the TORIES would have seen their tally of MPs fall by almost 100 while LABOUR would have gone down 24...

Multiculturalism isn’t working says Nobel Prize writer.

In the Daily Mail on Monday the 6^th of September, 2004 an article by their reporter Colin Fernandez of a scathing attack by one of the world’s most eminent authors on multiculturalism in Britain.

Sir V S Naipaul, winner of the Nobel Prize for literature, argues that immigrants must integrate into their host country, instead of demanding special privileges.

And he disparagingly refers to multiculturalism an ‘absurd’ and a ‘racket’ creating jobs for the Race Relations Industry.

The writer who was born in Trinidad of Indian descent, came to Britain in the 1950’s,was educated at Oxford and now lives in Wiltshire.

The term multiracialism became prominent in the 1970’s.

One definition is that ethnic or cultural groups have the right to remain separate rather than integrate into the mainstream culture of the country they adopt as their homeland.

In an interview with the magazine Tatler, Naipaul, 72, says:

‘What do they call it? Multi-culti…It’s all absurd, you know, I think if a man picks himself up and comes to another country he must meet it halfway.’

‘He can’t say. “I want the laws and the protection, but I want to live in my own way.’

‘It’s wrong, it’s become a kind of racket, this multiculturalism. Job’s for the boys.’

Naipaul’s comments come a few months after the New Labour supporting head of the Commission for Racial Equality; Trevor Phillips said it was time to abandon multiculturalism because it was damaging British society.

He argued that society should focus on ‘Britishness’

[With respect we ask why not also Englishness as over 86% of people of our island live in England, and with the now Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly and the possible break-up of the Union which we do not wish to see is it not time that the views of the majority are taken into account?]

and the integration of ethnic minorities.

Other critics from ethnic minority backgrounds include Sir Trevor McDonald, who said in July 2004:

‘If you don’t want to integrate, why come to Britain?’

Last night the Commission for Racial Equality said: ‘Multiculturalism has served us well over the last few years. But one of the dangers of it is we live in silos, living separate lives. There must be something that binds us together as one nation.

[Well there it is another example of the Double-Dutch brigade looking both ways at once and it shows the CRE has been the prime reason why there has been a failure in the past- with its obsessive policy of Multiculturalism and instead of admitting their mistake they claim that multiculturalism had served us well –by this they must mean the CRE- it certainly cannot have been the country.]

Naipaul, who was born into a Hindu family but is not thought to be particularly religious, also lambasts the ‘wickedness’ of Saudi Arabia for the allegedly supporting terrorism.

He says:

‘All this comes from Saudi Arabian money. I don’t know who we are kidding. Here is this war on terror and it is being subsidised by an ally.’

‘It (Saudi Arabia) has contributed nothing to the world-it has just filled the gambling dens and brothels. They are not fine people actually.’

Of the welfare state, he declares:

‘Today’s benefits society, with all its handouts for children is creating a new monster. You see these children that have been littered only for the money the benefits bring.’

He also says a ‘modest fee’ should be paid for state education to ‘introduce the idea of education being something of virtue, instead of ramming it down the throats of people who don’t want it.’

Naipaul rose to fame with A House for Mr Biswas. He won the Nobel Prize in 2001 for his entire body of work, including novels, short stories, travel writing and international political and historical analysis.
