THE USA ARMS INDUSTRY-AN
INSATIABLE BEAST OF PREY
The American arms industry
has grown so big that permanent war (as forecast by George
Orwell in his book 1984) has now become an
economic necessity. The arms industry needs a
constant supply of new orders in order to stay alive but
bullets, bombs, land-mines and missiles tend to have a
fairly long shelf life.
THEY DON'T GO 'OFF'
if not used within four
weeks. Tanks don't suddenly collapse after nine years
of sitting parked on a parade ground.
WITHOUT REGULAR WARS
the warehouses soon
fill with bullets, landmines and missiles.
THE ONLY SOLUTION
is, of course, to use up
some of the arms so that the arms factories
CAN SELL MORE.
Regular wars provide an
excuse for increased military spending.
The end of the COLD WAR
left many Americans why their Government had to spend so
much money on armaments -instead of on providing decent
housing, schooling and medical care for the poor. the
'permanent war' now being fought by George W Bush
(2003)
and his colleagues
solves the problem of the arms industry. Carpet
bombing Afghanistan and Iraq keeps the bomb-making factories
busy. After Iraq the Americans will presumably carpet
bomb Korea.
AND THEN WHERE NEXT?
